I dig the messy and drastic hatching though. It's perhaps why some describe digital painting as digital expressionism. As a thumbnail it looks like its communicating much more information than it really is. This is something that is effective in pixel art as well, expressing the most with the least sort of principle, so it's interesting to me as well.

Here's what I've drummed up based on your edit and comparing back to ref:

btw I'm trying to stick to these brushes:

They're a good general set for conveying a versatile array of textures, and with brush tweaks they cover even more.

@Facet You are too kind to me, I am not worthy. Back to the lab. Also do you think you can maybe post a higher res version, something not so jpeg artifacty so I can see your specific brushstrokes more clearly?

Will edit with results.

General Discussion / Re: Flashback HD & The terrible truth of remakes

I was going to post that as well. Here's the gameplay trailer:

I guess it's supposed to be a sequel to LttP.

I think the graphics are terrible. It looks like someone took the beautius pixels of the original and shred them through several photoshop filters, mainly blur. The pseduo 3D style seems to be popular these days. I get it, it's less labour intensive than traditional pixel art. Pixel art doesn't facilitate high res particularly well. I still think that if you're connecting something to a game as cherished as zelda 3, then it deserves to look revel in the medium. I think the 4 swords gamecube game really pulled the style off, that is pushing the pixels into something beyond the scope of pixels while still retaining the magic that made them marvelous to begin with. They were still psedo 3D but still looked like care, love and attention had been painted into the tiles. This looks like a knock-off.

Painted tiles are a style I am less opposed to. For example, the new Shadowrun Returns looks like a game that gives justice to the classic, rather than glossing over it to cash in on fan hype. Now, Shadowrun Returns also has the creator of the franchise at its helm, along with many others involved in making the originals, but then again so does Flashback, and look how well that's turning out. The sad reality is, is that some artists develop George Lucas syndrome and ruin the very works/masterpieces that catapulted them to where they are today.

The reason I wanted a break from the city image is partly for that reason. I felt I wasn't quite ready for such an advanced, architecturally dependent perspective drawing. I was also itching to flex some newly learned skills with some quasi related ideas. Tried one chara and one environment (a simpler one from nature).

I wouldn't call these finished either, I jump around a bit, but any crits would be appreciate. I included the refs for comparison.

With the kid I was def struggling with the anatomy/proportions. Kids have these strange physical distortions like bigger eyes and ears. I had to deviate from the ref a bit in order for him to read younger.

The cliff scene I am pretty happy with but is obviously not finished. I need to love on the textures more and then introduce some color. Both of these utilize the technique/brushes Shaddy uses in the videos I posted earlier. Some of the measurements might be off in the cliff, but it gives the same general impression/composition. If it's major I'll address it but the minute appropriation can drive you mad if you let it obsess you.

As Shaddy says, "How true to the thing do you make it vs. how much do you stylize it to make it more sexy/awesome."

You make some good points, Mathias, but for record's sake I had taken this further, and it got lost in the server crash.

Not totally satisfied with it and haven't worked on it in a while. I want to come back to it

My only gripe with it is that the frog is very wise-looking and sage like instead of menacing/opposing. Why would our hero want to hurt such a creature?

Well I liked tim's suggestion so made some adjustments as I was advancing this:

Since I am going about this in a different method, I am not sure if I should abandon or adapt the line art drawing. Picking up some great tips from this guy who has done work on Uncharted 2/3, one of the most inspiring games for me as an artist:

Recommend for anyone pursuing environment painting/concept art. :y:
