Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] GenericCommando Sprites
« on: August 26, 2008, 07:16:04 pm »
This looks pretty sweet so far.  I would like to see eyes on the closeups but I think the design of the game sprites is very clear and perfect.  Looking forward to seeing new animations and graphics!

Something I found helpful when I was learning how to approach things a little more scientifically was to shade the big shapes FIRST, then go back and start working on surface stuff.  So for a tree, even if it had cool, gnarly detailing all over it, you would shade it like a big cylinder first.  Then, when you could see how the light was reacting to the basic, major shape of the object, you can go back and start working in the details, using more appropriate colors (and with a better sense of the overall lighting).

BTW you are making great progress, keep at it!

You could try giving it some form!  You have a clear light source but its effect on your shapes is hardly seen.  You could also try pushing the design more, less mario ripoff and make it into something unique?

Umm I guess just the usuals:

1 - Where is the light source?

2 - Why dither?

3 - Where's its chin?

4 - What is it?  What are those pool noodles doing sticking off the top of its head?

1 - TOO BAD.  You need to redraw his whole body.  He's got wee little midget legs!  Also, he's still pillowed shaded and mirrored all to heck.  Pillow shading and mirroring are pretty strong signs that you might enjoy working with a smaller image, one that doesn't take so long to shade and doesn't require so much detail.  I've made very few pieces that are the size of your knight!

Challenges & Activities / Re: PIXEL ART DAY, STAGE 2!!!

Here's a fun test made with all (or at least I tried to fit them all) of the tiles you guys made. Of course the subject had to be Helm, since he's the one who started this activity :D I was astonished by the sheer amount of unique tiles; there were over 400 of them! That's over 100,000 pixels! Great job guys!

Sorry for the bad quality of this mosaic picture, the program I used wasn't registered so it allowed me to export only jpg :( But I will update it if I find a way to make it better!

By disregarding useful color theory your end result is flat, confusing and uninteresting, despite the fact that by simply applying some basic graphic design ideas and not changing the actual tile designs you have something that is really fantastic.

Part of challenging established conventions is realizing that SOME conventions aren't done just because they're easier, they're done because they work better than everything else.  People have been doing art for a pretty long time now!  I think you've chosen some very strange things to re-invent.

Also, I don't see how applying MORE limitations in this already cramped space makes the design work any easier.  I think it's much harder to come up with some cool, original tilework that would actually be playable AND fits the hardware restrictions.  It's easy to make something "different" when you don't have to worry about whether or not you would alienate anyone who tried to play the game.

Kazu Kibuishi designed his own font based on his own style of hand lettering, just to save time on full-length books, since he's kind of author/illustrator combo.  I think like anything else, there can be good manual and automatic fonts, but of course there can be horrible ones too :P

Last 3 posts are all great crits, I think if you ease up on the shadows, go back to orange and blue, and stick to crystalline shapes you will have something really, really awesome on your hands (its already pretty sweet) - great work so far!
