Pixel Art Feature Chest / GR#010 - Ogre - Sprite Process
« on: September 01, 2009, 08:20:12 am »
I'm starting a new baddie.. an ogre.  This is another stretch for me.

How's the anatomy?  He's supposed to be fat but muscular.  His pose is a hunched, lumbering walk.. kind of like he's going to slowly steamroller you down.

C+C welcome as always.

EDIT: btw, this is an initial sketch and will be shrunk down and reworked for 128x96 like my other baddies.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Feet, Ankles and Shins.. oh my.
« on: August 31, 2009, 08:39:08 am »
Ok, my next baddie for my game is kind of zany.  It's a giant, but you only get to see his feet.  So.. here they are.  Eventually there will be sandals too.

I've done more work on the foot on our left.  How am I doing so far?  C+C is appreciated.

I'm particularly concerned with shape and volume.  Something seems a little wonky, but I can't put my finger on it.

This is an anatomical stretch for me since I've never drawn feet this large before.

Reference is my fat ugly feet. :D

Gorgeous :)  I like what you did with the cheeks as well as the shadow under the neck.  I do struggle with a sense of depth in my art.  Thanks for the edit!  I learned a bunch.

I also took some notes and if I have time to spare, I'll try to work them in later.  But I've gotta move on to the next one.

Everyone's encouragement is going to be the death of this project of mine ;)

Well, after hearing the talk about contrast and seeing Redshrike's edit, i decided to pour some more time into this adding the contrast.  Of course when I did that I began seeing a bunch of other stuff and put another 6hrs on this..  :o

So.. here's my 16hr dragon.

Still open for comments, but I doubt I'll put any more time towards this.

Here's a dragon baddie for our game.  Probably won't have anytime to edit this one, since I've already poured 10hrs into it, but any comments and critiques are still welcome.  I really do appreciate them and they have been helping me grow as a pixeler, I believe.

Thanks for the great comments everyone.  I've been sick with the flu the past couple of days, but I'll be working on it more tonight.  So, an update will be coming shortly.

EDIT: regarding my avatar.. yeah it is.. well.. i mean it was shrunk down and pixeled over.  (Not sure if that's still cheating)  But that's also back when i *really* sucked at pixel art, and now I only moderately suck.  I should update it at some point.  Too busy right now.  My boy's almost 2 now and he was quite little in that picture.  And, yes, the palette is very saturated and the skin tones unnatural  :P

Thanks Dyble.  I might attempt hairs.  Corsair changed the contrast a bit.

C+C welcome.  How does it look so far?

EDIT: I just showed it to a friend and he thinks the head is a bit smooshed.  he says it looks too orthogonal.  I suck at foreshortening.  Can anyone help me?  My eye keeps being drawn to the second leg on the right.. is that it?  *sigh*

EDIT: More changes.. does this look any better? less like an almond with eyes :}

General Discussion / Re: What is your pixel art workflow?
« on: August 19, 2009, 08:30:05 pm »
Can I bump this topic?  Seems like such a great topic, but it kind of fizzled out, and, as a budding artist, I'm very interested in this.

Also, beyond workflow, what are some time saving tips?  My art comes painfully slow right now and I'd like to improve the speed of it.

Here's my next baddie, a giant spider.  Just a sketch at first.  Does it read well?  Any recommendations on pose?  C+C welcome  Thanks!

That's a gorgeous edit Reo.  Thanks a bunch.  The toes are what I was trying for, but failed.

ndchristie, I appreciate your comments, and it's not that I'm emotionally attached to what I have already.  The problem is that I'm still painfully slow at this, and I need to finish a bunch of these.  I honestly don't have the time to redo the pose.  I hope you understand.  I do understand your critique and will keep it in mind with future swashbucklers I attempt to draw.

You all will probably be shocked to know I've put 12hrs into this piece.  And yeah, it probably would be cheaper just to hire an already skilled artist, but I want to learn it myself, and I am getting faster.

Well, I have to move on.  I put the notes from Reo's edit in as further polish.  I hope I can come back and add them in.

I'll be posting another char in a little while.
