Pixel Art / Re: WIP: Beat 'em up!
« on: October 09, 2011, 09:44:34 am »
The UI looks better, though I didn't think the last one was so bad either. The colors on that one corresponded to the colorfullness of the fighters, the other, presumably, active part of the image. There's a healthy contrast between the objects that are active in the image and the objects that are just background. Though beautiful, the backround doesn't give away any information that's relevant to the gameplay itself. The health bars and timer, though, do. As such, it's okay if they stand out a bit, and as much as the fighters themselves do.

The new one works too, though a bit cold. I guess maybe it's just personal preference.

One thing that bugs me is that the character Juro looks like he's facing away from the "center stage", and thus his opponent. It's like he's focusing his eyes on something outside the image. Long John, on the other hand, is facing his opponent. But their eyes don't meet.

You see what I mean? I guess it could be fixed by just turning Juros head slightly.

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP][C+C] Pirate mermaid (partial nudity)
« on: October 07, 2011, 11:10:08 am »
I'm not really happy with the water or the rocks, to be honest, and especially how water interacts with the rocks. I'm wondering what would you guys do differently. The clouds are ok. I'm happy with the mermaid as she is, but maybe I'm not seeing something obviously wrong.

Thoughts?
Yes, there's definately something "off" with the water/stone-interaction. It doesn't look like there any interaction at all, in fact. The rock appears to be lying directly on top of the water, which in turn seems to be much too opaque to me. At sea, there would be foam building up around the rock, and water splashing up over it when waves hit. There's a contradiction in how the water in the picture looks very fierce, with its sharp edges, and how the rock looks perfectly unaffected by this.

Here's a reference to support my point:

It's not optimal, but I like that it somewhat shows the difference between the rocks interaction with still-standing water, and with fierce, moving water.

Here's another, which is closer to the motif that you have, and shows the rocks surrounded by active water:

Hope that helps a bit!

Hehe, cute lil fighter ;)
But i would try making his arms move faster. For now he looks like a - I'll call it steady - fighter ^^
Yeah, someone else commented on that as well. It really would look better with fewer frames leading up to the blast. I'm going to tweak it some more.

Thanks!

These are all really nice! Sorry I can't offer much criticisms though. I can't, partially because I'm not too familiar with the objects you're portraying, and partially because I think there really isn't much to improve on, anyway.

Nevertheless, I, too, love the jumping sword-guy, and it inspired me to try and make something similarly "simple" in style:

I admit it that it's rather lazily done, but I had fun while animating it nonetheless!  :-[

Are you working on one too, cels? ;D
I'd just love to see more of these crop up.

Thanks!

I regret that I haven't really got anything new to update with, and haven't for some time now. Sure, I've worked a bit with giving the bird the more natural walk pattern from the reference above, but there ain't much to show yet.

Also, I've been animating another couple of sprites. Might update with one of them soon.

Hey, thanks a lot! I'll try it soon, for sure!

Either way, I believe that they'll start sending out invites to whoever hasn't got them yet, soon. "...by the end of October at the latest" has been said.

Though I'm eager to start using it soon, so, great thanks, anyway!

Thansk for the reference! I hadn't really reflected on how the legs move.

First of all, you should upload it as a .png or .gif, rather than .jpg. The .jpg-format creates extra noise and colors.

Wait, that's air?
I thought It was supposed to be some kind of human centipede inspired human fountain xD

edit: Oh wait, I see you mentioned this in your first post.

That's an interesting point, though. Should one have to mention that it's air, in order for another to see it? Then, maybe there's a better way to illustrate it, so there's no misunderstanding? I do not know any solution to this, though.

Though after Seisekis reply, it does to me appear to resemble the movement of water, rather than that of air. Before that, I'd only made the connection to air, but that's maybe due to reading the first post before.
