Oh...erm, I'm not sure if I can bump this thread since I updated it. I checked the rules and regulation, but bump wasn't mentioned. Let me know if it's not the right practice though ???

Yea, the tent definitely looks wrong in comparison.

Also... is the side view of the character standing in a different pose as the front and back.
The side view pose seems like more... straighten up?

readability wise, I have some problem with the fang + meat with bone actually. You might want to try and beef them up a little.

anyway, really love the style and colors  :D

i feel like the colors are too darkened and saturated. maybe that's just me, i dunno.

yea, I agree... and if you're not going under any color restraint, I suggest you have colored lines for the lines "inside". Reason for saying so is because it still looks kinda dark to me.

Though balloon fight is never my favorite game, I personally love to see a remake. Along the line with Dig Dug, Ice climber and well... a few others. Even if its just a graphical revamp.

Anyway, the sprite wise, I agree with what huZba mentioned- the character seems to be a little too normal. I hope you don't mind that I did another version of the character myself here...


This 1st is the original, while the rest are different tryout with different size and color restriction.
I try to give him more character with his proportion and a red nose (the original had a large nose). Something that the player can remember him with. Hope it helps  :y:

I think bengoshia already mentioned the contrast issue, but I think you should really try messing up the contrast for the overall image. Sprite wise, if you were to compare bengoshia's edit and yours, one of the most obvious thing is that the character outline is not straight by the limbs... it makes the character way too stiff.

I realize that lots of first attempt are all giant images. Which I don't understand why.
For myself, I started with very simple, almost Gameboy pixel art to RPG characters and finally to town and in-game mock.

I think huge pixel art are tough to do, and less effective in terms of learning unless you know what you're doing.

Try smaller artwork next time. They're much faster and you get the practice more like that :)

The first two looks almost like sweet vector. Amazing. And so is the lego smiley.

But what's a c64 restriction?
Is it a restriction for a certain console? I've seen the phrase used in the forum every now and then, but never did understand.

Are you using any reference for your sprite and animation?

I'm working on something similar, top down view and all, but I'm having problem visualizing and couldn't get enough reference since I don't know much top down shooter to begin with. I googled for Chaos Engine, but couldn't get the rip sprite either.

Hope I can get some reference of recommendation from you :)

I'm sorry for not being clear - but, I did mean it as a mock-up frenzy, haha.

Then again, who knows - maybe some crazy coder and artist will actually get together to do something like that. The retro demake was pretty successful both as an artwork only mock-up frenzy and an actual demake of the game. Maybe just create a single level with boss and stuff. It'd be awesome.
