Pixel Art / Re: First pixel art--need some feedback

Is there a better way to create the sky gradient I have without using dithering?  Should I just add more colors, or is there a different kind of dithering I could use?

You could make wisps of cloud and haze. When trying to make a smooth gradient with a few colors, usually the best option is to think whether you can fill that area with forms and shapes that will hide the transition while also adding interest.

Yeah the nose and adam's apple both look a lot better. I also like the way you did the overlap. :y:

I still really don't like how contrasted the ramp is on creya's chest, and I think you can work to make it seem less apparent.
I made a quick edit to illustrate some of my thoughts.

- Firstly the pink color there just doesn't work for me at all, so I got rid of it.
- The darker skintone was too close to purple in my opinion, so I pushed it closer to the rest of the skin's hue and also lightened it a bit because it doesn't seem like it needed to be that dark. The tone lighter than that was too green, so I pushed it the other way and also lightened it.
- Finally I tried to fix her chest area by making the light hit a larger portion of it, so the wide banding wasn't so apparent. You could probably go even further than I did in that respect because the bright light that's hitting her face should be hitting her chest too.

OH MAN this is badass! 8)
The changes you made really worked.

I see you've tried to go symbolic with the design on his chest, but I think it might look better shaded properly, or at least some of the lines could be softened more.
I think the flag parts could look better if they were connected, rather than split where it begins to crumple. That's the feeling I got from the first version with the flag before you added in that separation.
There's an unnaturally sharp corner on the crumpled flag part in the centre below the sword tip. Could be smoothed a lot.

Great work. :)

Greg's adam's apple looks pretty strange to me, it's lit like it's a shiny piece of plastic on his throat. Considering you've used line-work elsewhere, you might wanna underline his chin, darken the adam's apple and get rid of the specular there.

Also Creya is suffering for lack of nose definition. One of the reasons PixelPiledriver's edits livened her up was because of this. You could also lighten some of the outlines around Creya's shoulders etc if you're placing her on such a light backdrop.

EDIT: Noticed something that's been bugging me for a while. On my monitor the color ramp you've used on Creya's upper chest and shoulders doesn't work at all. The pink is a touch darker (really hardly at all, but it shouldn't be that close anyway) than the beige that's meant to be darker than it. The ramp is probably too high contrast already for her skin so this doesn't help at all. I'm pretty sure my monitor is calibrated properly. Maybe someone else can confirm.

Pixel Art / Re: Large crystals

Can you give me a quick spoiler free run down of what this crystal stuff is in FTL?  I've played the game for 50 hours or more and never saw anything like it.

It's an unlockable ship type that you get from doing a specific set of quests.

I'd suggest studying Panda's work if you haven't already.

You may also want to remove all that dithering - make a proper texture instead when you're ready. At the moment it distracts. You'll want more colors to blend the darkest blue's edges against the light orange, since they're so far apart in both lightness and hue.

Yeah that's better, the raised knees helps a lot. I did a paint-over and think the knees may be more visible where the skirt ends however.

His legs seem splayed outwards from the knees in an odd way. Like this:

You should probably widen the skirt, spread the legs more. I also feel like they should be longer.

General Discussion / Re: Official Off-Topic Thread 2014

I'm using my wired 360-controller that I bought 5-6 years ago. However, it seems there are some who use keyboard/mouse exclusively. There's even a mod/fix for making the mouse-controlled camera work more smoothly, which suggests a demand. There might be a few hurdles in the way of making it work alright, but it's definitely doable.

Interesting thanks.  :-*

I like how you're progressing with this so far. Putting out the large shapes and 'lighting' is a good way to start and I think it shows promise. It would certainly be nice to see some of the ship reflect/show through the crystals. This would most likely be easiest using layers and opacity, then cleaning up later. You'll certainly need to add a few tones when it comes to that, but it needn't be more than subtle. Googling 'crystal refraction' and 'crystal flaws' will get you some nice reference images for adding detail and interest to the crystal forms. I would personally finish what you're doing right now with the simple forms then work on detail later.

Not sure if that was actually helpful but good luck. :P
