General Discussion / Re: Best graphics in a NES game
« on: June 20, 2008, 03:41:36 pm »
That is because the bosses ARE backgrounds, most likely with some extra sprites on top. This goes for most big bosses on the NES. Everytime you have a big boss where a big part just moves xy and does not animate you can be pretty sure that it's a bit of background.
Ah. I actually sort of figured as much. Doesn't mean that they don't look good though.

Ducktales used to occupy me for hours and looking back on it now, it was a gorgeous game for the system.
I forgot about that one! DuckTales did look good (and was also one of favourite shows when I was younger).

Here's a good screen from "Kirby's Adventure":
I agree, it was quite a good lookin' game for the NES.

"Totally Rad" wasn't bad graphically, although I don't know if it was one of the best. Some of the bosses looked pretty good for the NES (even if they did take place on blank backgrounds). Here, I pulled them from my emulator.

As Ptoing stated previously, Shatterhand is also a really good one.

One quick thing that I noticed immediately is that the shark could use some ribs in the hurt animation. Having only that one rib leading down to the fin looks a bit awkward.

I like the colours. The squid is my favourite so far, but then again I have a thing for invertebrates.

bring on the home made monster madness!

I just got the creature creator yesterday and I've been fooling around with it for a bit. Here's what I got so far:

In Spanish, things usually get a "gender" according to the vowel the word ends with, without any further reason.

On the topic of assigning genders to objects, does anybody know if there's a pattern to the way it's done in German? I've tried to learn it a few times (most of my family is of German decent) and it always bothered me how every item is either masculine, feminine, or neutral, when clearly (to me) all items should just be neutral. Can anybody explain this one? Also (as I understand it), all plural forms are feminine.

Pixel Art / Re: Transforming stuff

I kinda prefer the new transformer designs actually. To me, they just look more... interesting with all of the extra detail (plus, it seems to work better with the plot). Yes, Optimus is less readable in the version from the movie, but in defense of that style he is sort of hunkered over in an odd position in that pic and looks much better in motion.

Although I do agree that if you're looking for something that resembles the untransformed version, than the original is the way to go.

Pixel Art / Re: Anatomy help... again
« on: June 16, 2008, 10:28:25 pm »
I'm not too experienced with anatomy either, but without knowing the gender of the character and the pose you're going for, here's a few things I can offer:

-The right forearm is too short and the hand on the end is small.
-The knees are lower than they should be.
-Your character has no heels on his/her feet.
-The hood on the shirt is a bit small. It doesn't look like it would fit over your character's head.

Those are a few suggestions that come to mind immediately. Again, I could offer a bit more if I knew more of what you were going for. I'm fairly sure that there's at least one comprehensive anatomy thread around somewhere, but I can't find it right now. Maybe someone else can point you in the right direction. Although I'd have to agree with the people above that you should start smaller. I know that you want to produce something big before the motivation disappears, but the motivation always returns eventually, and if you get some other sort of practice in, you be better prepared for this when the urge returns.

Then again, that's just my two cents. I have to admit that in all of the time I've done pixel art, I don't think I've actually tried to do a single image that big before.

Mission: 12th Grade
Status: COMPLETED TWICE!

...At least that will be the case by this friday. I'm getting really tired of high school. It's not as much fun when all of your best friends have already left.

chriskot: Photobucket automatically converts bmp to jpeg. That must have been what happened.

Yep. Realized that later. I'd completely forgot about that since I started saving my things as PNGs to save space.

I like the concept of this thread. My younger brother (16) pixellates occasionally, but nowadays usually in a very simplified, bichromatic sort of style. He's actually sort of the one that got me into pixel art long ago when he showed my how you could zoom in on MS Paint.

I also have a 9-year-old brother who got into pixel art after watching me do it all the time, but I can't find anything of his on this computer.

EDIT: Crap. I don't know how that image became a jpeg. Oh well. It's only two colours so you're not exactly missing much.

These are pretty awesome. I especially love the Wii and X360 ones.

I knew I'd seen the DS one before. Do you know Agrifex on DeviantArt? Because he commented on one of my pieces once and he's using the DS animation as his avatar.

But yeah. Very nice work indeed.
