Keep in mind that when developing a character you should know all about it, how it looks, too. So here, if you're actually trying to develop a new character and not just putzing aroudn with pixels, you need a profile and rear view as well. Sketch on paper first.

Hi there :) Alrighty i have been working on a game rock cliff tile that will hopfully be able to use on a range of turrains like grass and sand ect.
Ok so here is what i have so far:


2 versions, both not to great, what could i do to improve them =p

Well i tryed making the light source come from upper right :P as for the can i actually made it without thinking of the texture >_< But id say it was a metal like reflective material(if that makes sense lol)

Also just shading a can since its round didnt blend to well, so i added a colour 1 pixel into the next shade on the can, is that bad?

I really appreciate this help :) This is very much trial and error on my part lol, I tryed doing what you said to the can(aswell as changing the colour all together) and Tryed fixing up the face:
