The pixeling is great, but i'm really not feeling the selout.

I'd either go with a solid outline or no outline at all because as it is, is rather accentuates the jaggedness of the edges.

don't worry about head rotation. you can do it as an experiement, maybe, but most of the time, the rotation ends up looking awful, and most peoples heads don't rotate when they run or walk anyway. thnk about it. when you're running towads somethig you're looking *staight* at it. unless you're constatly scanning your envronment...whic is just silly.

General Discussion / Re: Megaman 9 with 8-bit graphics

All this does is reassure me that campcom is one of the laziest game companies around these days. the fact taht the graphics are needlessly simplistic, even by NES standards, doesn't prove this point any more than the fact that capcom used the *SAME* morrigan sprite in *every* game she was in for well over ten years, even when other sprites got at least mild upgrades.

Personally, i think this is capcom trying to make a quick buck with minimal expenditures. if tehy'd just come out and say that i'd probably have alot more respect for them.

This guy oozes character, which is awesome.
As the lighting...i can spot a number of things that could probably be improved.

Maybe it's just my untrained eye speaking, but it seems like the main problem is the brightest shade of blue seems to bright, and makes it look like he's wearing a latex outfit. which, considering the mask, is ten kinds of creepy. Try darkening it and see if it makes it look more like fabric, rather than plastic.

Also on his gut, the shading is probaly rather uneccesary, as his head would probably be blocking the light from where the shine on the mask would indicate it is coming from.
On the wrist cuffs, the lighting seems almost backwards, like the light is coming from his ear
The undershirt should probably also be darker considering the head obstruction, and probably needn't have so many shades going on in it.

There's a few more things, but i can't really put my finer on it, so i'll leave the rest to someone with more experience and knowhow than myself.

Pixel Art / Re: Black and white
« on: July 29, 2008, 07:05:17 am »
Let me start by saying that i really like where this is going. I've always had a thing for pure black/white.

I think when using black and white it's - and this might just be a matter of style on my end - better to use white to suggest shape, rather than define it. I definitely dig the deliberately dark, almost gothic thing it's got going, but i think there's too much white, and it's sort of distracting.

One thing that black will do is sort of "fill in the gaps" so that you can imply detail without directly presenting it. Of course i'm no art student, and this is just an observation, so i could be completely wrong there.

Here's something I did probably 5 or 6 months ago. I'll probably never get around to making it not look like ass, but it'll kinda give you an idea of what i'm talking about.

and while this probably kills the entire intent of the thing, i thought i'd give it a quick/dirty edit. the upper part of the guys head.
Of course now he looks more frightened than anything.

One thing i noticed while i was doing it is that the guy's chin seems kinda ...large.

He's quoting old overused 4chan memes, which pretty much negates his opinion of anything, and probably reduces his age to probably, oh 17 at most.

I was recently exposed to Strapping young lad and various devin townsend solo projects.
I have to say, the skulleted crusader is my personal hero for life.

This, in particular stood way the hell out in the awesomeness department.

go buy this fucking album. right now. I really cannot stress how awesome it is.

Anyone else think mr townsend looks a bit like benjamin franklin?

Pixel Art / Re: Attack in 3 frames! HELP

That's better but it still needs some work.

no matter what you're going t have to move the body more to make it more believable. and it helps to go *across* the body, rather than paralell to it. swing an object. the natural motion isn't to go stright down with it, is it?

the animation should reflect this.

I Decided that i should go with a "heavier" direction. I (hopefully) made the feet a little bit less jittery but reducing the 'bounciness' of the legs, while -albiet slightly - increased the length of motion and amount in that area as well.

worked a lot more on the lighting. i'm still not 100% pleased with it, but it's better than it was.
added a draw back motion to better loop the animation.i'm not completely sure how to reduce the awkwardness, and i'll admit that it was kinda tacked on.

Reersed the direction so it would be easier to spot errors and things that didn't look right. fix more of those little tibits, that, individuall woudln't have meant a lot but on the whole, made the entire thing considerably nicer to look at.
