Pixel Art / Re: Opinions/Critique?
« on: August 09, 2017, 12:09:33 am »
Can you please give the full Image without doing screen shots

Upload your image (PNG) here : http://imgur.com/

And I'll try to check what can be changed and about your ship I guess the shading must be a little bit darker and the center Silver (engine) is more extended than your engines so the background of this Silver engine try to shade it a litle bit darker you know the shadows

(I'm here newbie to so if you think that this is not a greate advice you can ignore it ;D)
Ah, sorry about that. I can't show just the picture since it was exported in gamemaker, and that's meant to be an er... What do you call it? A door. Basically, since it's a cargoship, although I may get rid of that entirely.

Thanks for the advice so far though!

Pixel Art / Opinions/Critique?
« on: August 08, 2017, 07:35:54 pm »
So using the tips/advice and critique on my last post I came up with this spaceship for the game I'm working on. It's meant to be a sort of cargo ship, and done using simplistic shading/colouring. Can anyone give me some advice or critique on it?

One obvious thing I can think of is making the larger engine's front end fit flush with the spaceship more, since it sort of just "stops" now.

Pixel Art / Help with a spacey background!
« on: August 08, 2017, 06:00:27 pm »
So I'm trying to come up with a Spacey kind of background for the main menu of this game, but anything I do doesn't look too good. I'm not sure exactly where to start or how to make it look better, and my biggest problem comes with it having to be still, since if I have it scroll it, it will just look mirrored when I match each side up so it's flush, if you know what I mean.

Does anyone have any advice on stuff I could do?

Unpaid Work / Artist needed for a few tilesets.
« on: July 27, 2017, 07:36:26 pm »
Hi!

So with this Metroidvania game I'm working on, I'm finding it very difficult to come up with the some tilesets needed. Specifically, for the surface of the planet/some ruins which I also need tiles for. Most other stuff I can do, but these are really making me struggle, so I thought i'd ask here.

Now before I start, yes, I can't pay. Mostly. I may be able to pay a little (Probably up to £10/$15), since I don't have much money to begin with, but if anyone could actually be kind enough to help me I'd be very grateful.

As for specifics, you can go wild with what you do for them. They just need to be 32x32 pixels.

Ah thank you! I'll try that out!

I'm currently remaking the tiles entirely to be a lot smaller and simpler, sort of like metroid/axiom verge's tiles.

Pixel Art / Need Opinions and Advice!

So I'm trying to make a sort of power station kind of area for a platformer I'm working on, but I don't like what I've done and can't seem to get anything right.

I sort of imagined it being pretty bright with a lot of animations and all that, but I can't get anything I like. It just looks too... Grey. If you get what I mean. If anyone could give me some advice on things I should do to make this thing look better, that would be great. Thanks.

(Really sorry about not sending just the pixel art! I'm kinda busy right now, so I don't have time to cut out just the pictures of the 2 rooms, also, the yellow on the "pipes" is usually a lot brighter, it glows from a darker yellow to a lighter yellow and the default tile for it is just the darker one.)

PS: The game has a pretty lighthearted and not too serious tone to it, which is the reason I need it like this anyway, so keep that in mind if you come up with anything.

PPS: I still need to add backgrounds, which is the reason it's completely black. If anyone has any ideas for that, that'd be great aswell!

General Discussion / Re: Alien Planet Tileset
« on: July 13, 2017, 12:32:54 pm »
I think if 7Soul wanted you to look at existing tilesets, they would've linked you to a site specialising in those. Don't draw inspiration from other tilesets if you want to do something unique. Draw inspiration from reality! Mix and match aspects of different strange places on earth to create your alien world. Study what's common on our planet, and you'll know what to avoid or to build a "twist" on.
I'll try that then, thanks!
I may still take a quick look at some references though, possibly to just get a general idea. If you know what I mean.

More ideas

Those look pretty cool. Thanks!
Gotta love search engines still including completely unrelated things. Maybe it's people using unrelated tags.

If visual references don't "click", maybe you can design your alien caves top-down to gain a more analytical understanding of what you should draw and what you can use a reference of.
  • What's the origin and type of the caves? They might be mixed (e.g. an underground high tech secret base hidden on the far side of a roughly dug mine accessed from the back of a large limestone dome with stalactites and stalagmites).
  • What colours and textures of rock are present? Are there other materials and surfaces, like water pools and streams or minerals?
  • What details mark the caves as alien rather than terrestrial?
  • What features (e.g. stalactites and stalagmites, bat guano, moss, bones...) are common and characteristic enough to appear on tiles?

Those questions will definitely help! Thanks!

https://images.google.com/ is a good place to start
Well, I checked that, and it came up with vague stuff. So no.
And I'm looking to make something 100%. Referencing existing tilesets will eventually end up with me taking parts from them

General Discussion / Alien Planet Tileset

Hi!
So I'm trying to make a tileset for an underground cave system on an alien planet, but I can't come up with anything. I have a vague idea how to do rocks but I'd love for it to be original.
Does anyone have any advice or tips?
Thanks!
(Not sure if it's my phone or the text is really big. If it is, sorry about that!)

Start with an attempt so we can figure out where you struggle and how to help you through it!
Oh cool! Thanks!
I'll look when I get home, as I'm on the bus now.
I would create a 3d sphere and map it with the texture in a 3d modeling application, then use this as a reference.
Any suggestions for what to use?
