This new version looks rather non-pixelled in the BG. Though probably you'll fix that anyways. Awesome stuff.

General Discussion / Re: Introductions
« on: February 15, 2008, 01:36:35 am »
Well I've actually  been on here a while, but I guess I should introduce myself.

Well I'm Brian, I basically started pixelling back in Paint on Windows 3.1, sometime in the early nineties. I really enjoyed making pictures mainly using dithering, although I didn't call it that back then. I just called it "cool patterns" (or something to that effect). Later on I attempted to make graphics similar to commander keen. Sometime in the late nineties or early 2000s I started actually calling it pixel art, at which point I started making sprites for games in an attempt to get my brother to code a game for me, although I never got enough for one game for him to do it.

Anyways, that's how it goes.

I think the main skin color is really way too gray and dark. Maybe you could lighten it up a bit and make it a little more saturated, or make the other other color a bit darker.

I'd say the dark outline around the eyes (eyelashes?) is a bit strong, maybe a lighter color would work better.

Ok.. I think I've gotten everything Robotacon said.

Is it any better, or have I ruined it even more? :/

I'd say the sky needs to be smoother, right now it looks like you just freehanded it. You should probably also make sure the pixels are in correct order. And then the mountains look like you just used a 2px brush and did them that way too.  So, basically you need to work on better pixel placement in the bg.

Meh... The rocks in the ground could use an alt tile.

General Discussion / Re: Good pixel book?

Ah... I remember years ago I found a book which they stopped printing, but the owner of a program called "gamemaker" got the rights to distribute it. (Gamemaker kind of sucked... unless you coded everything, thing it was just a tool to compile you games written in GML, which is a bit like javascript.) Anyways, this might be helpful, I remember printing the whole thing out, although I can't remember if I ever found any of it useful.

http://www.gamemaker.nl/feldman.html (took me a while to find because game maker is now weirder and sends you to another website)

Haha, that's awesome. It really bugs me that it's scarf is cut off, though.

Around here you can get a 75 sheet RULED notepad for $1. But it's sucks for art, it's like see threw and the lines really take a lot away from it. The dollar store also sells sketchbooks for about $2.50, but it's basically just white construction paper, so that really doesn't help much at all either. I tend to use BIGGIE sketch pads, because it still isn't uber expensive. I'm going to try moleskin, though. Hopefully the pages don't instantly fall out like BIGGIE ones do, that would suck.

I'll work on what you said, especially the lighting on the sand. But how do you mean about a "mix on contrast"?

It's not exactly a desert, just a fairly empty beach. I should probably add some beachier things, eh?
