Pixel Art / Re: Critique on Walking Animation?
« on: January 19, 2017, 05:28:30 am »
Some notes:

* the head is stiff -- needs to bob with movement

* the hair needs to have more bounce/movement too
at the least some sorta breezy motion

* the legs are really thin
you can either stylize this in a more cartoonish format
or possibly cut out the height and shorten the character
or simple add some weight to them

* the shin area is animating oddly -- although the feet are fine

* the arm swing is in full windmill -- either naturalize the animation more to dangle

OR for a more arm-to-chest swing, lean her posture into a jog animation, starting with elbows bent

edit: apologies, not one for references but perhaps these examples are better/relevant?

These are just a few technical things atm that I can see

Personally am not the best but here's my attempt

It might help with the walksprites if you haven't started yet already

Agree with MysteryMeat too, but the sprites could use a smoother shading or width to them I think

For the majority the sprites are good except for the shins/legs on the south and north facing sprites

Thank you for helping out

Made some updates

Pet peeve alert: That's a fir (or maybe a spruce), not a pine. This is a pine.
Here's an edit illustrating some of what I said in my earlier post, using solid areas of black and white to show the form:

Tried to edit your illustration down to a 16x16 sprite:
Then made my own -- is this an improvement any?

In mind to what you said about noise and demonstrated
I tried to fill in more rather than dither here - are these results better/readable?

In addition to the trees, I've worked on:
01. Brick Walls
02. Broad-Iron Fencing
03. Windmill
04. Samurai
05. Monster
06. Main

Note for the Brick Walls - I attempted to recreate a curvature wall as seen in castles
I think it's called either a "Bastion" or a "Roundel" (?), not sure

Honestly am kind of new at this so

Dropped down the roof a little for perspective reasons
I agree with MysteryMeat in that it should be longer somewhat

Highlighted some areas in red that need editing/touchups

Added white to the sign for a brighter neon tint
Added shadow to the ledges of the roof also for perspective

Attempting to practice animation and have a love for small line-art

Looking for any feedback, all input welcome

Going for an Ico-style but in snow with a graveyard feel
