Here is the edit I posted previously. I wanted to give you a day or so to work on it on your own before I posted it.

I would love some feedback on this.

I also would like your thoughts on black outline vs. outline with variations on the nearby colours.

Personally I prefer the black outline. Some of this preference is stylistic, but I imagine some of it is because I must be lacking some skill with pushing my character out from the background without it. I appreciate any feedback or tips you guys might have.

Personally i made the buttons 2x2 and had them touching at corners. It reads like they are separated.

I agree on them being adorable.

Hi!

-One thing to keep in mind about Gameboy colours is the fact that one of the colors must be the transparency. To help you get an idea of this, just change your background from green to any of the 4 tints you have chosen.
-A lot of the detail in your piece is gone at 1x scale. The hair and face are close in color that the blend together.
-The readability of it is pretty low. I can tell what you are going for, but there seems to be a lack of intentional placement of pixels in the forms. (I.E. the arm on the right)

That is just my quick thoughts.

[I removed the edit, and instead leave just the adjustments I think would benefit you.]

It seems to me that your image might benefit greatly from a few adjustments.

-A black outline. On a dark background the controller stands out well, but any light/desaturated color robs it of form.
-Color adjustment. The white you chose was very...dull is the best word I can come up with. It wasn't a vivid looking controller. Additionally the shading color you chose was so close to the base color as to be basically invisible at 1x.
-More aggressive shading/Not pillow shading. At this scale, subtle hue.saturation.value changes are basically invisible, so if you want a good shading color, crank it up! :)
-Make the buttons bigger. 1px detail can often be completely lost at 1x scale, or come off as noise which is worse.
-Check your references. Make sure you always are drawing what you see, not just what you think it looks like.
-Get rid of noisy details that do not impact readability.

Anyway, these are just my 2 cents. I am still learning too :P

Pixel Art / [HELP] Seven Samurai
« on: August 17, 2016, 10:05:45 pm »
I have been working on this image from Seven Samurai (If you haven't seen it, close this tab and go watch it somewhere!) I am using 5 shades.

I have one version where I try to render out all of the little graves. But I do not care for it. It looks so noisy.

I reworked it to draw attention only to the four graves at the top of the hill.

It still just feels wrong. I was hoping I could get some help. I am not glued to 5 shades really, it was just a limitation I set for myself.

Just a quick thought about the Gameboy palette. There are indeed 4 colors or tints to use, but one of them will be the transparency. So your sprite can only be technically be only 3 colors if using transparency. I believe...Someone please correct me if I am mistaken.

Other than that, I think the shape is fairly interesting, and certainly reads as a tree.

I have to say, the 1st step is the most pleasing to my eye. The other two appear far too noisy. I think you lose that separation between boards when rendering the wood grain.  The shadow from the 3rd is nice, though.

I just did a quick paint-over.

The character is very interesting, and the pose conveys a lot of weight. The biggest issue though, seems to be inconsistency in lighting. I just went back in and reapplied your colors according to the light source you stated. I only worked on the fabric.

I don't have time to comment much more right now, but someone more knowledgeable than I will probably see this later.

Hope that helped :)
