I've been doing (and I think making progress) these things to improve my pixel art (make me a better pixel artist):

1) Copying existing, professional pixel art pixel-by-pixel. An artist friend has told me to do that to improve.

2) This technique I have come up with on my own, accidentally. It comes from the first technique. Basically if I create a pixel art but it's not very good, I try to improve it. I try to see how a pixel art technique (like a shape) that I need to incorporate/edit it into this art to make it better. So I focus on creating characters, in particular anime characters. I know anime characters have extra long strands of hair. So when I try to make an anime pixel art character based on an existing character, I need to make those hairs. I had real trouble doing those so here's what I did. I have created a hair. Then I see how existing pixel art anime hairs are like. So if I want to make like Goku's hair from Dragon Ball Z, I see how an existing Goku's sprite hair is like and use that technique on my own character. I have learned more about space in hair and how extra strands of hair in anime are like from Goku's hair. I first see it, then I copy it. I feel that by both studying it intellectually and then applying the technique, I can learn techniques like space and shape of extra strands of hair.

3) While doing #1 and/or #2 I also do experimenting of my own using techniques like space and hair strands for my anime character's hair until it looks better. It's really trial and error.

Here's professional Goku's sprite:

It's Sasuke from Naruto part 1. These are the references:

This is the base:

This is my Sasuke from years ago:

This is Sasuke that I've been developing and editing yesterday and today:

I really think I've really improved(I'm not entirely sure how, I didn't draw, I've just done pixel art and copied pixel art pixel-by-pixel) in the newest one. What do you guys think? I think the shapes, shading and colors are better. I also think that the newer one is closer to the the references than the one from years ago.

General Discussion / Please explain to me this Pixel Art technique
« on: February 26, 2017, 03:17:48 am »

Zoom in to those hairs. Those hairs inside have different colors. I think it's always brighter colors in the hair. So please answer this and help me understand this. I have other pixel arts (on my computer this time) that have various colors inside the hair. I just don't understand the purpose of those colors. I want to learn this to use this if needed (as I take it it is needed) and use it in my own pixel art.

I am a beginner to all art but I did practice a little (very little) pixel art by copying them pixel-by-pixel.

Please comment on the latest overall and his head/hair and cape. And comment on whether I've improved overall and his head/hair and cape. Thanks in advance!

So I was creating a pixel art (I'm a beginner to pixel art and have no background in art or any art training) and it seems I've noticed having too much contrast is as bad as having too little. Having too little I know doesn't give enough depth for the picture. But it seems having too much has a problem too (maybe it's the same problem) as I've felt my picture was too different and thus I couldn't relate that color to the color I'm contrasting it with. I was creating a cape where it should be contrasted with a cape that is inside and thus is blocked light. I will post my pixel art for critique soon too.

I was making a pixel art based on this caped anime character guy (this is not a pixel art): See this real image has inside of a cape darker and in contrast to the outside of the cape which is lighter.

So do you need a just right amount of contrast, neither too little or too much?

Pixel Art / What's the difference between these 2 sprites?
« on: December 08, 2016, 02:00:06 am »

The one on the left uses colors weakly while the one on the right is professional. Here are some questions:

1) Is the one on the left using colors with too high saturation? If so, should 2 different hues between the colors be less saturated?

2) Or is it that just the contrast is too high between those? If so, can anti-aliasing help?

I think the contrast is too high in the left one and I don't know whether anti-aliasing or less contrast will help.

General Discussion / Some Pixel Art questions
« on: December 06, 2016, 01:41:41 am »
So I have some pixel art questions as I am learning. I am asking about one part of pixel art having the same hue but different shading. I don't understand why good pixel artists sometimes shade just 1 pixel surrounding other pixels. In fact, some pixel art I saw and have on my computer they have a bunch of different pixels next to each other with the same hues but are just shaded. Why do they do that? I know you need to shade because of the light and to make the pixel art look more 3D but why have a bunch of different pixels each next to each other? And if this is good practice, how do I do that too to make it look good?

Pixel Art / Agumon (from Digimon)
« on: December 05, 2016, 06:06:46 am »
Hey I have just begun my pixel art training. Can you tell me is this pixel art good for someone who has just begun?

Here's the image:

Pixel art Agumon before revision:

After revision:

I tried improving his bad tilt, his head shape and his eyes. I am not sure how good I am at shading. Can you tell me did I improve overall in the second revision? How much does this pixel art Agumon look like the Agumon digimon?

I have just begun learning pixel art. I am trying to do these things but am failing. But I can't find any tutorials in how to create this. I hope I am not breaking any rules as I have read the rules and the FAQ. Anyways I want create 2 things:

1) Different styles of hairs for characters like the crazy ones anime(Japanese animations) characters have. Like the Saint Seiya characters.

2) I wanted to create this: http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/saintseiya/images/8/8f/Pegasus_Cloth2design.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20090801213148 (the armor in shape of a Pegasus on the left) but I can't do it at all. I would try to do it and post it here but I really am terrible at this. It just doesn't work out. How can I learn how to create something like this?

And by the way, there are other armors that I wish to create and can't create any of them.

Please assist!
