Pixel Art / Re: Potato?
« on: March 27, 2016, 07:27:12 pm »
Potato is not that easy to draw. I think it's rather hard to make it look like potato? Why?

Potato is a stone with lvl 2. Neither thing has got distinctive signs like tomato: juicy red ball with leaves on top of it. Potato is harder, because if You draw a rock, watcher knows it's a rock, but how to change a rock into vegetable?

Potatoes have different sizes, shapes and colours, so they can look differently. All of Your vegetables are good, maybe the second one look like a cheese, but nevermind. :P

To draw a potato that looks like a potato and the watcher knows it's a potato, I recommend to make background, surroundings to force watcher to think like this. For example, if You place Your potatoes on kitchen table, You know they are not rocks.
Second option is to make a lot of different potatoes and place them together. There is a danger of looking like a pile of stones, but it's not a problem, when You'd make really really different potatos.

I know this is making things the wrong way, but I wanted to say something about potatoes, because they're awesome.  ;D

And here's my potato. He's named Fred. :)

Pixel Art / Re: [C+C] Main character for a NES-like platform game

Which one do you prefer? The left (bouncy) or the right one (not bouncy)?

Hello!
I think if he's got a metal armor, he shouldn't be bouncy. Usually even when character has got a lot of muscles and he is so strong that armor doesn't affect his moves and his steps are bouncing, it looks a bit hilarious. Just imagine epic knight-king-warrior running like a ballerina.

Also Your outline has got some banding. People always say it's not good. I'm not sure about it, but You can consider this :D

These trees are amazing! I love them! Also the shading is good for me in all pictures.

If this orange mob is supposed to look like a tongue, maybe You should make it more pink and flesh-looking. You could also add this sinew under the tongue or something like this.
I think these white things in the orange guy look like mouths. If so, maybe You could make it easier to reckognize, for example adding teeth, tongues (hehe), because it looks like eyes from Terraria for now.  :)

I think now it looks much better, but I'm not sure about thinner lines at borders. Maybe they could be as wide as lines between items?

Also in my opinion it looks better with those shadows from one of earliers versions - it makes an illusion of 3D inventory. With this one coloured lines it's a bit... boring? Maybe You could add some details not only in the corners of the whole box? Some golden things or something like this?

By the way long time ago I remember I played a demo of "Planet Centauri" from GameJolt and I was really delighted by the artistic design of background. Great work!  ;D

Pixel Art / [CC] How to draw nothing?
« on: March 07, 2016, 05:57:29 pm »
So, I asked my friend what she wants for her event. She said "nothing". So I tried to draw "nothing".
What do You think about it and what can I improve?

Version with the spaceship:

Better (?) version:

Pixel Art / Re: crossbow gun thing

I'm probably the last person to criticize, so I can give You some advices based on my opinion how to make pixel things look better.
I think this crossbow is a bit uncomfortable to hold. Maybe try to smooth the corners to make it look more realistic. If You wanted to make it very blocky, You did it, but I think this plank on the front should be curved backwards to put a string on it. And it should be thinner, because now it'd pull the front of weapon down and add a lot of weight to construction. You could add more details in different colours e.g. metal mechanisms, bone nails, some paint, or something like this.

Hello!
After all Your advices I realised that I should delete this drawing and start again with blank project. I will do this, but first  I wanted to do something with this drawing - I wanted to make it look at least not bad.

Step 1. First of all I changed his head, because it was terrible. I also took an example of steel plated legs from Mr 0xBD and change a bit pennon to make it more gentle. I also changed the stick to an spear, but I'm not glad in 100% about effect. I changed the grass effect and shadow, again from Mr 0xBD.
So, Mr Atnas, I tried to feel like this man and do something to explain his floating. I decided to make him fall down on the ground after taking an aroow, so it's pushed a bit inside, and around his wound there is more blood. Also I changed shoulder pads. I think now they are less jelly. I moved his right hand, so it doesn't look like holding a gun
He's a viking, so I added more muscles, but I don't know if they are ok.

Step 2. My friend suggested adding details like leather straps, nails and other things. I made him a veteran by making scars on face and arms, but I don't know if they are visible enough.

Step 3. Explaining situation. I added a beams of light to show that the valkyries are taking him to Valhalla. I think they break cold colours and I'm not sure about their shape. I also added menhirs in background to break the line of horizon.

Step 4. I added a valkyrie and beams looking like lighnings. I didn't want to have this big green spots, so I added some stones.

So, what do You think about it? I know that I wasn't directly doing what You've told me, but I tried to improve this one. And thank You for Your advices (yeah, it should be in the beggining)!
