I like this new version, but you're still missing a transition! Rule of threes, foreground midground and background. You've got a solid fore and back, but there needs to be some midground trees to properly segue between the two!

That said, they are an EXCELLENT look, and even if you stopped here to work on other things for your game it would probably be fine!

Close! The thighs should bend inwards, not just cinch like that! You also need to tweak the bent arm more, it looks like lines drawn over her torso because it's too pulled in.
I recommend lowering the grab point from her shoulder to her elbow or slightly above it.

I'd reduce the delay on the final frame unless you're shooting for a sort of soulsian frame-management type of playstyle!

Post the results anyways so we can give pointers, you're not expected to succeed the first time!

Try going for a nice grenade launcher animation. Gun angled up slightly, a nice phoont noise, and a smoketrail arc. And of course, the recoil frame.

Excellent change, looks much smoother now without compromising the tiled rough aesthetic of the games from that era.

Proprtions should be about the same in any style! Shoot for realism then work backwards, even mario follows the same general rules in spite of his cartoon art style! His leg bits are all the same lenght, same for his arms! And his torso is only ever as lomg as his legs!

Looking musch better to my eyes! A better transition between thr the two forest densities might help though, kinda shoots abruptly into the backing treewall before the mountains

First thing I noticed was that you didn't factor the light-source and shadow of the lid into the gold!

(Edit: Side-by-side now, for easy viewing. Mine on left, original on right.)
I didn't fix everything, of course, but your light source appears to be coming from the viewer perspective towards the leading corner of the chest.
Given that, you should /also/ try to tweak the shading on the side of the chest to reflect that light source!

My biggest obstacle was trying to enter into art as a whole through pixels. A good pixel artist has to start from a solid foundation of artistic knowledge.

I didn't do that and it took me way longer than it should've to grasp basics like rendering and anatomy.
Not sure why I posted this here, I think I intended that for another thread. Whoops.
On-topic, I'd say try to practice reducing details to pixel clusters. For example, let's take your cloaked figure's cloak. The way you've rendered the folds is too noisy, and gives it a very unclear muddied look. I've taken a crack at applying it here to the cloak and flag thing. I also changed some face stuff but ignore that, it's not really helpful.
