General Discussion / Re: [Selection] The Art of PC98
« on: July 20, 2019, 06:49:26 am »
I see someone has been browsing 'jazzisthebestformofmusic' tumblr account. a friend of mine runs that, and I love the particular PC98 shots he chose, even some of the weirder ones.

So I've gotten myself back into pixel art as of recent and I've been doing a bunch of new things (Of which you can see here since it's all the same project)
But my recent one has been bugging me. Namely, the way I handled the arms on it.

Something just feels off about them and i just can't quite place the issue.
(also worth noting I'm working within Sega Genesis limitations for the palette and color count used. I'll have to for the project if it stays in it's current form)

I'd post the reference of the character but it's particularly NSFW, so I'll link it for everyone's safety https://twitter.com/Pochincoff/status/1135393452642856960

Pixel Art / Re: Studying Pixel Art with Megaman X sprites

rather than try to fully explain, I just did an edit.

I changed the chest to read more like I think you intended, IE a ridge along the middle. now it comes across as looking as if it's facing forward a bit.
The main changes were the head. higher contrast and a small rounding of the.... eyebrow ridge? and increasing contrast of the brightest skin value. I changed the eyes, mostly because they read as looking up a bit, but also to give them a better presense.
I uhh, wasn't sure if this guy was an alien or not, but i sorta removed the nose too? that one was just playing around really, feel free to ignore that.

I did a thing with some AA. I may have gone a bit overboard...

whew, I'm back finally! I was working on a bunch of painting stuff and 3D modelling, but things seem to have calmed down a bit now.

made some engine flares for the tanks. hopefully they can be reused for the UFOs, but i haven't quite checked that just yet, haha. I kinda lumped all the frames together, i guess I should have separated them into separate gifs, yeah?

don't use Minecraft as a basis to learning pixel art. it's remarkably bad.

my friend finished the first two tank models for rotoscoping. I started off with the Panzer IV today. haven't exactly gotten terribly far yet, but figured I'd ask if they look okay so far.

E: half the up-down frames are done. might make a full ship spin at some point but it's not really on my radar at the moment.

Turret and body are on separate layers to allow for a full range of turret rotations and firing animations independent of the rest. all four planned tanks will be done like this.

E2: okay major important frames done, I'll do the rest when it's not late and I'm not super sick.

That is REALLY nice! I hadn't even thought to do pipes or anything, and that's pretty much the sort of variation it's been needing. I was trying to hold the saturation down so the player could see well but honestly this should work well with a little tweaking here and there. Thanks very much for the help!

A few things look a bit weird in the mesh but it's all things that are easily fixed.

@transilience
I'll be doing things like that as I go along, but for now I'm working out the big sections before making the interchangeable props and such.

E: I did alot of my own changes after I copied things over I liked. the main thing I've noticed is I think you assumed this was a panel a person would use. it's actually a very large wall with multiple hangar bays inside of the alien flagship. (I never said the aliens were super duper advanced!) They're like 12 foot tall weirdos, so they can still be seen in the windows and stuff, which I was in the process of rescaling them all to fit that. the things next to the piping looked like ladders, so I made little escape ladders and maintenance ways for them! isn't it cute?
Anyways, this is my progress so far.

Thank you! I'm trying really hard to make this look the best i can!

more Space Panzer work today. a bit of a background piece I'm hoping to make a few different variations on.

The texture is only a 256x256 I've been making by hand. i guess that makes it okay over here?? idk!

my problem at the moment is I just have NO EARTHLY IDEA what the top should have. I kinda used all my ideas on the bottom area, and now I'm unclear what would look cool for this.
Any suggestions or critiques would be greatly appreciated!

I haven't done pixel art in years. I started posting over here sometime in 2009-2010? but my account seems to be MIA. I think it was Carl Winslow, but whatever.

I think these were the first things I posted way back then?-->
Well anyways, on to things I'm actually sort of okay with. these were for various things or simply for fun. Since sometime last year, I've been really practicing again to try and get this skill into shape, since 3D art is getting boring and illustration's slowly becoming my job. Pixel art makes great unwinding for me. (Or getting mad at shitty indie pixel 'art', as seen by the Interstellaria redo at the end there.)

But now, here we are to the point of the matter, SPACE PANZER.

A friend and myself been working on a game project (in Unity) for the past month (not necessarily the whole of that month haha) and in that time I've been playing around with various things (most of which I'm not even sure will be kept, particularly the placeholder tanks in the work area there.) but I've been doing what I can to make sure we have assets for testing enemies and other stuff.

Using Spriter Pro is helping to make the hardest parts of animating the multi-part structures easy. I'm going to make extensive use of the software for all sorts of cool things.
On the totally opposite side, I'm also going to be doing quite a bit of traditional pixel animation for this as well. in particular, the tanks and human vehicles will be rotoscoped by hand to achieve a good swath of the frames. (which is why the test tank sprite is so ugly. it's the first thing i made!) However, I'm generally making all alien craft by hand unless it's absolutely necessary to do otherwise. I'm sure there will be a few that will be too large or too complicated to animate without some sort of guide!

Please let me know what you think of any of the sprites Im' currently working on! I'd greatly appreciate the guidance, especially since I've been so out of practice!
