Thanks a lot for the tips! I really like the contrast changes you made. I was worried that it would make the characters not stand out from the background but I think it actually retained the characters while giving everything more depth. I modified the colors for my tileset and made some slight changes to character contrast. I also dropped the yellows to match the wall darkness throughout. Here is one more sample layout with the new tile colors.

These tiles are actually for the ship used as a home base, so wont include monsters. But I just like playing around to get a feel for things.

Both have already been given more color and contrast, I don't want to get to the point where the walls and floor are more noticeable than the characters. I'm trying to keep the characters and monsters as the first thing your eye is drawn to. I also need the black outlines to separate limbs and body parts for the characters so I can give more customization options. I would prefer shifting hues and not having black outlines but when people start altering colors for character customization, things will get messy.

How can I make the side door and side walls fit the perspective more correctly? Now It looks like the character is sitting on top of the wall for the side doors that are open.



UPDATE I recolored the wall tops, made the side walls thinner, added a 1 pixel layer of visible side on the inner wall face of the side walls. I think it is a big improvement. Still not sure about that open side door though...



UPDATE UPDATE I changed the side doors, partially based on suggestions. Still not perfect because the feet overlap the top of the wall but not much else can be done.

I think the textures are pretty solid in my opinion. The outer shapes seem a bit too confined or consistent to me but otherwise looking good thus far.

I reworked a bit to up the contrast. Had to keep the black lines because I will need them for custom character colors.
