Pixel Art / Re: [CC] A first-time piece (Towers)

That, is freakin' sweet! With just a few cheeky animations it brings the whole scene to life. One reason why I'm hooked on pixels I guess :P Maybe the bottom right person just enjoys spending his/her nights flicking the light switch on and off. Each to their own right?

Going to give the tower brick textures a good going over to make them a little more unique as I can't unsee the uniformity going on. ; ;

Could be a good piece to keep coming back to as the confidence slowly increases.

Thanks BadMood, looks awesome! :D

Thanks for your reply PixelPiledriver, I see your point. The idea behind the 255 was an extreme case to test against and had totally forgotten about doing an actual real-world scenario instead, so thanks for knocking together some examples.

I'm thinking if I added a little more contrast around the edge of the ship itself, it should bring it forward a little more. Also, perhaps reducing the amount of black on the ships body to give it more vibrancy against the background.

Am I on the right lines with that strategy do you think?

Thanks again!

Pixel Art / [CC] 2D Shoot 'em up readability

Hey everyone,
bit of a different kettle of fish to the weekends post of the pixely tower thing, I'm also working on a sneaky little project that's basically your usual 2D shoot 'em up.

So far a few ship concepts have come out but I chose this one for now (hope the colours don't blind anyone!):

Basically I'm just wondering above all else how that reads to people who don't currently have a bad case of eye-strain. The game's going to be pretty low-rez, but I've just been looking at selective outlining to make the thing stand out in a variety of situations.

I think the worst one on there is the red background, as obviously that clashes with the actual ships colour. So not sure how one might get around that...

Anyway, if you've got the time feel free to bash us a comment or two. Only way to get better, right?

Thanks guys!

Good morning! I see what you mean actually, even if those rooms were abandoned they'd still have shards of glass around the edges (if it were a run down neighbourhood), or if it was the opposite you'd expect to see some form of window intact for the most part.

I might actually just single out a bunch of windows and really focus on getting to know them. Thanks very much for the advice, more reference can only be a good thing. :)

Hey eishiya,
thanks very much for your critique! The colours were my biggest fear to begin with so I'm quite glad that they turned out okay. As for all of the other points, I'll very much take them on board and give them practice. Perhaps it'd be best if I broke each of them down in to sections to work on rather than a large clump.

The piece its self was actually a bit too big for what I was ready for so I got quite lost when working on it. Maybe one to come back to in a few months after more practice?

Once again thanks very much, really appreciate you taking the time to dive in and have a look! :D

Hello everyone,
I knocked together this piece over the weekend and are looking for general critique on technique, usage of colour, readability, etc if you've got time to deal some out to a newbie. Frankly I got way too ambitious for a beginner, so I believe that I stretched myself too thin.

I also did a bad thing and used a 'bit' of a photoshop glow on the sign at the top of the main building. So in future I'll be leaving things like that right out!

Literally just getting in to the swing of things, I've rage quit once in the last few days but are determined to keep at it!

Thanks in advance and stay classy.

Ah yes that particular area was supposed to be further up. But with the sea in the background I think it may be giving it a bit of confusing perspective. It should all be side on really like the foreground...

It's worth noting that I 'may' have just slapped that mountain and sea in as a last minute thing.  :blind:

Dayum! That texturing makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. :o Thank you very much my friend. I was wondering if it was possible to spice things up a bit without overdoing it, but I really like your ideas. I'll see about making some adjustments (have made a few other scenes since this one) and see if I can get them up to scratch too.

Thanks again!

Some say he's just an old man. But some also say he's something else...  8)
