Well I was working on this for quite a while and I'm not really done with it but I guess I reached the point of asking for other opinions here.

I think your fox looks quite good!
Some clothes seem like a good idea (if you want them that is)
One of the colors you use for the skin/fur isn't really needed and with one color more and by using
the eye color you might be able to make something that looks good.

The molten versions aren't looking right to me (I wouldn't have known what they are without context)
Increasing the contrast of the plant, wood and stone colors may help to make it better as well

These sprites are looking great! I like the colors you used.
The style seems consistent to me (exept the dithering on the 3rd one)
I would suggest to not use dithering as I like the way you shaded it (exept the shirt on the 2nd sprite's shirt. I think it looks weird but that might just be me)

These looks great!
I would say you stick with the first one as well or at least if you game isn't ment to be that moody, because I think it looks more interesting as well. I also like the black outlines you did on foreground things as you are clearly able to see what you are able to interact with. The midground may be a bit confusing being that bright and saturated, but I can't really tell from these screenshots alone. Showing a bit gameplay or more screenshots would help to tell. (Next to the fact that I would like to see more of it :P)

The contrast needs to be way higher. I mean I can barely tell that the base has different skin tones. (even if zoomed in)

I think it's a bad idea to place the light source to the point the viewer sees from.
I makes it looks pillow shadish.
