Pixel Art / female reaper
« on: July 03, 2007, 03:21:13 am »

Its for the he-she thing at pixeljoint. I took a few liberties on the design (such as skin) to try and make it abit more feminine.I probably overdithered it abit too, and the feet are sucking.

I'm having trouble on the angle of the scythe. I was sort of going for an over-the-shoulder thing but I totally muffed it up. I figured I'd post here because you guys are awesome at C+C and the like.

don't mind the overall sketchiness of parts, I just don't know where to take it.

While Faktablad's are nice I don't think I'd want to see those in every post...

I voted for snake, I was cheering for snake(4) though... :/ I felt the ruggedness and simplicity could've gone over great.

Pixel Art / A pirate. (and a pothead !)
« on: May 27, 2007, 09:30:00 am »

I recently seen PotC3, wanted to make a pirate, so I did.

9 colors, because thats the way it ended up.

The hair is blah and I don't really know what to do with it :\

update: pothead, 12c.

I had made this edit earlier

I changed around the colors and shading alot; I got rid of the pure-black outline, thats generally seen as all kinds of bad and not-good (to me/most people anyways). alot of parts felt pillow-shaded and such, I picked the top-left as my lightsource and set the highlights and shadows accordingly. Another thing about outlines is they make things feel bulky and can tear out some detail, so by softening them up or getting rid of them entirely you can make things look generally better by fitting in more details. I also re-did the palette, the hues you picked seem boring and bland, and didn't work entirely well together IMO, I shifted the greys towards a blue and the reds towards a brownish to try and make them abit more eye-pleasing. Alot was said in the previous posts and I'm too lazy to think of anything else to say, so have fun and enjoy your stay.

I'd say using that green as a dark tone makes him look like a mossy old log or something, I made a quick palette edit but it evolved into something more.

1) palette: try to stay away from clean ramps using the same hue and sat, start with something like a blue or red and work it through the color you want in to a yellow or something.

2) I shittily shaded the head; but it seemed like everything except the top of the head was shaded from the top-left. I also changed around the shading of the chest and a few other areas to try and make it fit better.

3) I'm sure there's a reason why you weren't dithering, but it can help you out in some spots especially when blending 2 different hues together.

4) alot of your lines seemed to be padded and AA'd according to outlines, ie. top of the head, bottom of the jaw, other outer-surface areas like the shoulder, and part of the neck, try to stay away from that, it makes things seem too thick at parts and other not-good things.

5) if you're using most of the colors everywhere, make sure you actually do that. you use the gree to AA the dark skin to the darkest hue in almost every area except the neck, it gives a sloppy and unfinished feeling.

that turned out odd. Tweaking may ensue.

Pixel Art / Re: Attack Animation- Crits Please!
« on: May 19, 2007, 04:30:18 pm »

I threw that together really quickly, and its kind of shitty, but I guess it might help give you an idea of how to make the attack more lively and rapid. You'll want the attack to happen as fast as possible when the animation starts, as previously mentioned. The animation itself there seems to be some jumpiness to certain areas (the feet, tail) that youl'l want to smooth out.

The originall looks more like a love tap than anything dangerous, so I'd say "aww cute" and pet it :)

although in your larger drawing the light is very "epic"-ish and so-forth, it doesn't really look like that in the pixel, I'd suggest maybe a more balanced color ramp, dithering (as said earlier), and some clarity on the lines in some parts, If I get the time tomorrow I"ll try to make an edit, but in general, it feels like it fades to black too quickly

on the pose; I would say the legs are a little too far apart, I really like the lines and the style, but for someone just standing with a relaxed looking upper body, his legs look too "aggressive" (as if he were ready to pounce on someone), and his right arm may be too far fowards as well.

Pixel Art / Re: My first human sprite after 4 years of spritin'
« on: May 05, 2007, 11:17:30 am »
I made a quickie edit, all I did was paint over the old sprite and tried to show depth and lighting; the skin had it, but the clothes didn't.

I ditched the pattern on the clothes for something more simple; i'd suggest saving that for last so it can follow the lights rather become the lights. (dunno if that last part made any sense or not, but yeah)

I also straightened out the legs, they seemed bent oddly, and I don't think you should worry about toes at this size, readability > details in most cases
