Pixel Art / Re: not-quite-finished KOS fighter fox

I can't decide if it's cute or scary: it's got the big cute foxy head, but some scary-ass poisonous claws. And then the heels... i'm definitely scared :)

You've used a cel-shading on the whole character, i suggest you remove the dithering on the cheek to keep in style (and fighter sprites usually don't use dithering). Try a different outline color on the white parts of her body (head, tail). The arms and shoulders could probably have a bit more definition, perhaps indicate where the shoulder is by changing the shape of her sleeve.
The alternate version is nice too, i like the metal shading. The anatomy is a bit more towards the cartoon and less to a "aggressive" fighter, due to the short legs, but that's part of the style, i guess :). The part where her right leg meets the foot looks broken, try moving that small curve further up the leg (or removing it).

It's pretty sweet :), you got the dirty shading look alright, i like the technique and the colors you used as well, and the "messy" outlines as well. The thing on the bottom of the sea (is it a keyboard and a mouse?) could use a bit more definition, it's a bit "vague", hard to tell what it is. Maybe you could shape the clouds in the same dirty style as the character, i think it would look good. Keep going and finish this, dude.

Thanks for the comments so far, taking them all into account.

Hase: yeah, that's more what i had in mind, cycling through some different anims.
Razz: thanks for that suggestion, i'll try that when i come back to this animation. Doing some work rotation now...

Here's a preliminar version of the dude's running cycle. Do you see problems with it? I'll have to clean it up, further define his body parts, and shade it properly, but that comes after getting a satisfactory motion. Can't wait to hear those cc's.

Your pixelling techniques are good here: good color choice and combination, nice shading and selective outlining, and pixel usage to define the character in such a size. A little pick about the colors: I'm assuming he´s wearing some sort of pants, and i suggest you use a different tone for his legs other than the one used for the skin, they look like pants made of skin :)

Your obvious problem here is the anatomy of the character. You should study what you can on anatomy, like the proportions of the human body and muscle groups. Practice a bit drawing from life, or from good references (real pictures or drawn ones). I suggest you spend a good time doing this on paper, and then come back to pixelling, look at this piece and see if you can work out the problems it has. Good job, and good luck!

General Discussion / Re: King of Spriters 2006 - Project of the Millennium!

Decided i might have a go cause I haven't done a fighter sprite before and all the entries so far look great. had abit of trouble so i looked at a few other sprites. That helped alot. Don't quite know why I started with the pants, probably because I thought they'd be easiest. I think it looks okay so far, but I don't like the left leg (right side from our perspective) very much. Criticism is hugely appreciated.

Those look mega realistic, good job! I love the shading and shapes you did on the folds. Although it's a bit too dark, i don't specially see it as a problem, since denim pants exist in such colors. But keep in mind, when you're adding a top part for the character, that  lighter colors will contrast with the bottom, making it even darker, while dark colors will bump up the general lightness look of the pants.

Derek Yu pretty much rules (play Eternal Daughter, kids!). Did he use to participate in old Pixelation? What was his nick?

I agree on adding animations such as those you mentioned, and cycling through them randomly. But if i remove the breathing, leaving just sporadic animations, the sprite tends to look static and lifeless. I think some sort of continuous movement is needed, even if barely noticeable (at the size this shows up, even just one pixel moving is quite easy to see), and breathing seems to be the most probable and significant movement at that size. I did try to keep this to indicate the lowest possible pixel movement (to my abilities), so it would most realistic, while keeping in mind the size.
I hope it doesn't sound like i'm rebating critics, i'm just trying to find a balance between them and my views, not losing sight of the original vision while at the same time finding out it's weaknesses...

By the way, love your stuff :) and hope to hear your comments anytime you please.

Good to know nothing bad happened... at first this looked too similar to what happened to pixelation. Would have been nice to drop a note on the irc channel's topic though! And this is a good reminder to back up the board periodically (board and the wiki), just in case.
It's good to have you back pixelopolis :)
