Pixel Art / [C+C][WIP] Character sprites

 I am Trying to start a sprite sheet template which I would use to create a selection of human characters with 8 directional movements for a top down gauntlet style project, however, sprites are a huge weakness of mine in pixel art.

Here is my attempt so far:


I am quite happy with both the male and female head so far, however, iIam struggling with the body the whole character needs to fit within a 64X64 frame with room around for animations. head body and arms are on separate layers.

I would prefer the arms to be more up as if holding a shield sword or staff but I drew them down, to begin with so I can get a better idea of proportions, perhaps the body is a little too small for the head?

it has been a while since I have been to these forums, I always find the advice helpful.

So, I'm working on  a little project inspired by the game Hammerwatch and have been working on a hud that will show health, mana/stamina,  pink charge bar, exp/level progress and active item

here is my roughed out concept that is based on Hammerwatch's hud:



it is designed so that more of these blocks appear side by side depending on how many players are in the game.
However, I am unsure about its design and was hoping to get some opinions or thoughts on improving it?

any advice is appreciated.

Pixel Art / [WIP] [C+C] Creating a Fennec Sprite

Hello peeps,
in the past i have had so much really useful help from you all when working on a project, i love seeing the little improved versions of my work and find it really helpful for improving my skills. so i m back again with a new project ^-^

I wanted to practise animating a character sprite, animations being one of my weak-points, but before i can do that i need a character to animate.

I decided i Would try my hand at a ninja-ish styled Fennec fox that i have named 'Fai':



as an extra challenge i was trying to limit my colours so i decided to try an aim for something Mega drive/Genesis styled, limiting my self to less that 15 colours, and based the shading style on sonic.. going for a rounder highlight


Originally i was trying to make the  body fur blending into some fur coloured trousers, as though they were joined but detail kept merging with the digitigrade legs..
i Feel the character needs more clothing to compliment the scarf but with the limited colours and the scale i couldn't get anything to look right.

I could really use some opinions on how to improve the character, a second set of eyes would be a huge help as i am now just seeing a blur of orangey colours.

And thanks in advance for any help.

Pixel Art / [WIP] [C+C] animating a sonic character sprite

I am working on  a character sprite sheet for a sonic hack, character sprites and animations are not my strong point so i wanted to post the progress up here to get some advice as i go..

the character i am working on is the green canary named Tekno:



i am currently trying to get the standing / idle animation to work.. in these 3 frames she is supposed to be turning her head toward the screen much like sonic does underneath.
but I am having trouble replicating the effect with Tekno as her eyes are wider and more detailed and her head lacks details like sonic's ears..
currently it seems more like her head is being skewed than turning..

Pixel Art / [WIP] [C+C]Sonic Hack Sprites

I'm helping out with the art for sonic game hack but I'm having trouble on this current sprite



essentially i'm trying to draw a snowmobile like contraption of which this particular variation of robotics flying machine sits in

the idea is the boss will fire bombs out the back of it as sonic chases after doges them and attacks..
I am having trouble figuring out how best to do the shape of the vehicle and as such the sprite has gotten away from me.
(and thus looks like a big flat square)
is suspect the cannon I've drawn is a little to big as i used on of the lava reef bosses that also fires out bombs for reference

also due to the way the mega drive works I have a severely limited colour palette, so i'm trying to minimise colour usage as much as i can.


if anyone has any ideas of how the vehicle should look/ be shaped id appreciate the advice..

I have been working on the character on another thread and decided it would help if i already had a level mockup, that way i can better match the characters style to the level.

so while i was taking a break from the character i drew up a tile set and made this mockup.

i was wandering if people had any ideas on ways to improve upon it
at the moment it feels very square
and obviously there is no background.

Pixel Art / [WIP] [C+C] My First Largish Character Sprite

I have never been particularly good at characters and sprites so i decided to have a play around for practise.
i have done tones of texture work and tile sets before but most of my character sprites have been for a very small scale.



this is my first attempt at a larger more proportionate sprite, i am happy with hour the legs came out but i am struggling with the hair and face.
my experience with faces in the past has mostly been two black dots.

Pixel Art / [WIP] [C+C] Customisable shoot em' up ships.

Need some thoughts and ideas on how to go about this:

we are working on a shoot em' up game that will feature customisable player ships. as you progress through the game you will obtain new wings, weapon systems, cockpits engines and power cores.

the problem I am having is originally the ships where only supposed to be super simplistic styled, like 4 pixels.. but now that we want customisation we've decided to tweak it to a larger scale to show off all the different ship parts visually.

i have ended up with this which is sort of somewhere between the simplistic style and the scale we are going for:



it looks okay but could use more work, and Because of the way in which the parts separate there are some areas where adding detail will be hard.

any thoughts or ideas on how to make the ships look better / or how to better stitch them together?

I have not really any experience with character profiles like this. this ones meant to popup next to some text in some shoot em up.



i was trying to keep it down to 5 palette entries, but I just couldn't get the eyes to look right, adding another shade made them look like eyes but they still look out of place.

( i have always been awful at characters and sprites, i am better at tile sets honest :p )

Pixel Art / looking for advice for an RPG sprite

hello, i have been working on a little project as a way of improving my pixel art, i am very much at the beginner stage and while  i can draw reasonable looking walls and basic tile-set components  i lack the skills to draw things such as character sprites.

i have flicked through the net and tried out a few tutorials but my sprites always come out looking a bit odd

i am attempting to draw a larger scale version of a hammer-watch sprite sheet
(which looks like this:)


my attempts at creating a base for the sprite came out like this :


i could really use some advice on how to go about improving this, i know that something does not look quite right with the base but i cant put my finger on the problem.
