Pixel Art / Re: My Gallery [criticism desirable]

The tail changes massively in both length and thickness during the animation. It's especially noticeable during the last part, where it's practically still but changes rapidly in length. Same goes for the shins.

Also, the foot goes on after the collision like it hit a sheet of paper. Remember, for every reaction, there's an opposite one. Look at something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rkcJBK0ecw The body moves back when it hits. He needs to have already braced himself when he hits, otherwise he'd be blown off balance.

Look at your reference more. When Ali does the shuffle, his shoulders and head are almost completely still in space. The only thing that moves are his elbows and his feet. Your character looks like it's doing the walking animation from River City Ransom but faster.

If you want to add a bigger impact to the swing, I think stretching it a bit horizontally on the frame of impact could look great.

I think the lessons from that animation is anticipation and squash-and-stretch. Notice the size of the plume when he does some big movement.

Of course, the followup is good, and the particles look smashing, but I think the two previous concepts are more important.

I think it looks much better now.

Now the problem is that anticipation for the third hit. The second swing serves as both hit and anticipation, and I think it makes the third hit harder to read, because it comes directly off of another hit. For me it looks more like swing down, then drag it upwards to prepare for second swing, then the stab is the second hit.

On the last hit (is that two hits or three? Is it swing down, swing up, stab, or swing down, draw back, stab?), the shield goes forwards.

Try it yourself. Get up, do a swing. Does the opposite site of your body go forward or back when you swing?

Think about where the light is coming from.

It's strong enough to give a highlight on the plume, but both the helmet and armor have less highlights? Metal is very reflective, they should have the highlights, not a feather.

Also, your shield has its highlight on the opposite side, and the axe has a single pixel for shading that makes it look like the edge is broken or dented.

Just before she throws the punch, her vest on her right side moves in sharply. What movement is that indicating, or is it just a slip-up?

While I do believe you've done some good work with the wrinkles, right in the beginning of the animation, the left leg's wrinkles act up.

I would really like to see a frame where she steps forward with the right leg as the pulls the arm back. I think it's sort of jarring that the leg teleports, especially since it moves to roughly the same place the other leg used to be.

I just want to chime in that that post was great and helpful!  :y:

As for the opening post, I think you should add more variety to the ships. Now right, every enemy has cannons that point forwards, and only that, so all enemies can only fire shots forward (or that is what the player would expect, at least). Add ships that can fire in all kind of directions, or with different kinds of weapons rather than the kind of unintresting tank-like cannons they look like they have now.

Is the lineart cleaned? There are still some oddities left. In the fourth one, the double punch, her right foot is making some really weird movements. I guess that all of them look fine alone, but in motion her foot boils, and doesn't really follow the ground. The same goes for the lines for her knees, which goes in and out of existence. I believe that adding or removing the lines, even if it makes every standalone frame a bit less proper, makes for a less janky animation.

The second one, the crouching punch, she throws her punch from her chest. That makes it kind of a slap instead of a straight punch. The knife also moves a lot. It would probably look better if it was held a bit more still.

I really like the speed on the low swing with the knife, with a large swing being done in one frame. The other attacks look a lot weaker because they have more inbetweens. They would probably look snappier and more powerful with less frames between start of punch or stab and the full extension of the arm.
