Pixel Art / Re: Platformer Character WIP w/ Sword Swing Animation
« on: March 02, 2014, 11:22:22 pm »
Hi. I might not be one of the "extraordinary artists who post on this forum", but here are some ideas :
- an outline ? maybe not something you were thinking about.
- More contrast between your light colors and the shadows. The cape, even if its bright, can have dark shadows on it.
- Does he has to wear a white cape at all ? (by extension : does his outfit has to be blue on a blue background?)

Here's a fast edit. Just tried to find another possible color for the cape. Don't know if it looks better though...

Hi. I reworked 4 of your sprites because of colors issues that bugged me. Also, i have to admit, i really like your first sprite but these new ones seem a bit rough. I think, you could have worked more on them before posting them.
I reinterpreted 3 of them (didn't really work on the robin hood archer because i can't feel it, it's too cliché for my taste). Hope that will give you some ideas.
Keep up the work on these fellas.

Thanks Conceit for your comments and the edit. I was trying too hard to respect the proportions so exagerate them was totally out of my mind but you were right about this.

As for ggale, i don't know... i work on photoshop because i'm so used to it it's hard to change (and i'm on mac). And it's possible to keep layers under the one you're working on (but i think everybody knows that).

One more frame and some corrections :

Thanks guys.

Here is the last update of the tree by itself. I still have to learn a lot about light sources and shading but tried my best here. Next thing will be to place it in a background and see if the palette needs a lift or if the lights need a boost.

Hi. I made a very rough edit of your 16 color version. 16 is plenty and more than enough for your piece.
I tried to place some light on the leaves... but i'm not very good at it, just to give you an idea. Also played a bit with your palette. Still a lot of colors to clean up.

Updating the tree again.

@Agent00X : My inspiration for this tree are the ones i see by the windows of my flat, so i can assure you : the stem can split in two similar ones.
Anyway, thanks for the edit. I like what you did but i'll stick to a minimal palette. The darks are washed out on purpose because this tree will be placed in a washed out background image and doesn't have to really stand out.

@looaks : Love your works on your trees in your post with the murky water and this added texture on mine (thanks for the edit). I tried to emulate your edit but, again, trying to stick to the minimum texture required to be understandable.

@both of you : I understand you don't like the floating leaves.. I decided to reduce their amount but not to erase them completely. In fact, i can imagine these as animated cubic particles as if they were moving with the wind and i think that would "attach" them to the tree in a way.

Thank you for you comment Agent00X. I tried to fix my mistakes. Does it look better to you ? What's wrong with leaves ? (I'm not going for a realistic look. It would be insane to try to draw every leaf on this tree. That's why i tried to find a way which is a simplification but also gives the feeling of the multitude, as i wrote in my first post.)

hi.
Personnaly, i love your clouds !
I see different things that should be fixed.
First thing, save your art in 1:1 scale in .png or .gif format = easier to edit when the piece is still a wip and you don't mess with your palette (.jpeg compress everything badly).
I tried to come back to you 1:1 scale but the .jpeg screwed the palette so i let you fix it.

I'm not very good at it but i think your light sources are strange : some leaves should be light and they are not, the rocks under the grass are shining but i don't understand why.
Also, the bright pixels in the clouds on the down left are awkward. You should maybe get rid of them.

Pixel Art / a tree attempt. help needed [WIP]
« on: February 13, 2014, 12:04:09 am »
Hi. I try to make an autumn tree (the palette is not definitive). I saw many trees made in pixelart and a lot of them have a kind of balloony shape i don't like. What i would like to achieve is the feel of lightness and weightlessness in the leaves. What's important also is the complexity of the leaves because of the their multitude and the unique position of each one of them.
So this is a first try but i'm sure with some help i could do a better job.
