Pixel Art / Re: Newbie Trying To Pixel An Island
« on: September 18, 2013, 12:31:20 pm »
@Decroded shaping the land like that was totally where I was going next with that! (I may have run out of free time at work) Let's just pretend that the water is coming from a magical underground source pumped up through the island by some sort of giant beast.  ;D

@Wallie I like the garden of the gods mountain idea, you can definitely find some awesome shapes out of those sort of mountains. If you're working off the ones you currently have use your reference and cut some hard edges and more points out. Don't worry about it taking you quite a bit of time, it does for all of us but the more you do it the faster you get. Also stick around here and you learn tricks to creating wholesale shapes before trying to tackle huge detailed things and you start thinking a bit differently about how to pull everything together. I've (<3 Decroded) learned so much and I feel like I keep getting better at this as will you! Just keep at it, don't get discouraged by everyone's work, speed, and talent then you'll get better with every piece!

I had a little fun at work and had a few ideas so I did a little rough scribbling, I'm not sure how realistic you wanted things or if you wanted them more representative but I tossed a couple ideas in there if you wanted to go a bit more realistic and take in a few of the ideas others tossed in. I made the water flow a little less smooth and a bit more random, the mountains less like big rocks, and the trees more like a forest (though you might have wanted them to be giant trees), and added a little beach like area. I didn't want to go too much further because I didn't know what you had planned for the other land.

Don't be afraid to give your major elements a little more form instead of cutting them right off, let them feel their way into the land like real objects would. Also remember that water gets a lot of it's darker colors by depth especially from afar.

Pixel Art / Re: Hunter Character Concept (battle with pixel plaid)
« on: September 14, 2013, 02:48:19 pm »
That's definitely the hat type I had in mind originally! Then after looking for some plaid stuff I came around this which is more/less same thing but plaid, lol! http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/415quQigICL._SX342_.jpg

So I tried out a bit of a red color and then attempted a bit of a implied plaid style. I don't love it but I don't hate it. I hope you don't mind me using your edit for a base for messing around with all this!

As for the gun I just intended it to be a standard hunting rifle that would probably read a bit better from the side than the front view. Something like this http://www.kimberamerica.com/images/rifles/family/model-84l/classic-select-grade.png

But I thought it would be fun to try out a couple different styles with thinner/thicker barrels, and a double barrel for fun. :) I think in the end the longer barrels loose some of his foot readability though.

I totally understand your point, it was a concept my buddy came to me with to do a small hunter sprite in vein of the zelda/pokemon/whatever perspective and he wanted it in 16x16 so I pushed back a bit about it, haha! Then he wanted it to look more like that stereotype talking about the plaid and for some reason I thought it would be more do-able.  :'( But the size limits he wanted was mainly why he was a bit square inside the bounding box. My very first concepts were a bit wider and taller even.

I love your edit, for some reason I didn't think to define out the little muscles in his arm and give him more of a pose. (maybe I should stop doing this right before bed, haha) and the animation is totally what I had in mind when I was spriting him though I'll probably add a little more muzzle flash if I can get him to that point. You even fixed my sad little bushes!

I might try and at least move him to a more red-ish cap or something, depending on how far I can take the look with him hopefully I get some extra time at the office today to give it a shot!

Hmm yes I see what you're saying, I was thinking more like a wave pushing the view out from the center but in the end I think it makes it more confusing for the eyes. The client wanted things really intense and vibrant but I think I took it a little too far and it hurt the comp too like you ere saying.

I totally agree about the color ramps, don't be afraid to separate your colors more to create better depth. Also don't be scared to use those separations to create shapes within your piece. To add to the reference note, don't be afraid to take a look at real life examples too. Light works in weird ways especially on metal and it's worth studying a bit. (I admit I need to do this more myself)

Super quick edit while I'm at work:

I realized I forgot to come back across this topic with what I came up with to fill the piece all out. Things still aren't finalized on his end so maybe with some luck I can come back across this and give it a few more runs of changes. Thanks again everybody for the help! <3

Pixel Art / Hunter Character Concept (battle with pixel plaid)
« on: September 12, 2013, 04:33:50 pm »
I was talking with my friend and he wanted me to whip up a concept hunter sprite (as in shoot deer, drink beer style sterotype ) for him. As I got further into the design he wanted me to give him some plaid/make him look a bit more like that style sterotype and I realized that I have no idea how to make a good looking plaid in low pixel count. I'm trying to keep it constrained into 16x32 (he originally wanted 16x16  :'( ) I've been staring at this thing for a while and I think I'm losing the hat shape now vs what I want to accomplish.

Here's what I thus far: (please ignore the shoddy background, it felt more natural to draw on some sort of scenery vs the normal mid grey for me this time)

Pixel Art / Re: Need some help with pixel pulled paper

I always wondered what Kirby would turn into after he ate the whole world!

You have no idea how much paper I have destroyed trying to figure out how I wanted to set it up. I feel bad for the trees!

Unfortunately I had to submit this today to the zine so I won't get to work on it before going to print but I'm definitely going to refine it a bit more to toss in my portfolio. For the print version I brought up most of the paper edges, mountains, etc. an 8th of an inch (about 2 pixels expanded) to battle against the bleed that will incur but also give a little more paper pulled in.

I really like the idea of taking out the lines, I just couldn't get the shading quite right with it. After the next tweaks to the curves that's probably what I'll tackle next.

Thanks again! :D

Thanks again for the help everybody, I think I'm feeling pretty good with how it came out now. I know it can always be better though I learned quite a bit about making paper, hehe! :D
