It's funny because we just had a discussion about tutorials in another topic earlier today. :P Tutorials are awesome but remember to figure out WHY certain things are the way they are. Don't just do those 'step by step' tutorials but really delve into why pixel artists do certain things that they do.

I'm not a professional like other artists here on the forums but I'll do what I can to give you some constructive feedback.

Color

As a beginner myself I always start in greyscale (case and point: http://azkai.deviantart.com/art/EcoVerse-BlackMarket-Greyscale-WIP-Preview-366889743 ). That's because color can easily cloud our judgement. We can spend hours working on color alone when really it was never a problem to begin with. You're right in thinking that there is WAY too much red in this picture. Now, color is subjective so let me tell you why I personally think there's too much red:

You could easily make this a monochromatic scene and ditch that black for a very dark and desaturated red... however; I really don't think that's what you were originally going for, which is why I'm not recommending it. Red is one of the most powerful colors we can work with and it's one of the most saturated colors found in nature. Remember that saturation will draw the eye to it... so right now, because everything is SO saturated, the eye doesn't know where to look.

To learn more about color I highly suggest this DVD http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/store/product/472/color-Theory%3A-The-Mechanics-of-color#.UZ-_JrVUWAg A little pricey to some but well worth it. And since we're on a tutorial kick today, here's a pretty handy tutorial as well: http://purplekecleon.deviantart.com/art/How-I-See-Color-A-Tutorial-184642625 (But not a replacement for that DVD. That DVD is simply amazing and no tutorial or article I have found can touch it or do it justice.)

When you do work with color later, try figuring out what your focus is. Perhaps it's the lonely flame in the corner. That, then, can be the most saturated part. (Saturation is useful for all sorts of things, not just directing the eye.)

Errors

You have some banding situations going on, particularly on the bed. As well, I assume you want that checkerboard pattern to be the pattern that appears on the bed, however; there's no 'feel' to the sheets or pillows... they look incredibly flat and have no texture.

Even very simplistic pixel art still typically gives a feeling of texture since, as humans, we imagine ourselves touching and interacting with things--especially in games and what not.

Also keep in mind that the light coming in from the window would be effecting the color of things most likely. :)

Those are just a few things I can think of off of the top of my head. Good start and keep at it.

It might just be me but it's very hard to help or give critique just based on a sheet. We could get into banding / line shapes or what not but I'm not sure that's really the kind of critique you're looking for. :P

One thing I would say is that in some areas (like the very last item on the bottom right) lacks *something* that helps me determine what the item is. Perhaps it's contrast, or perhaps the outline is kind of drowning it out for me. I'm not sure, but I still can't figure out what that is. :(

Another thing is the arms. It looks like they're flat at his side when he walks but typically we swing our arms (unless we're ladies, ahem) as we walk or stroll.

Otherwise, everything looks alright to me. The sprites and items look very generic--but that's good, if that's what you're going for!

I agree with the above, especially the dithering. Remember not everything should need to be "perfectly gradiated", even on skin. In fact, kicking some of that dithering will give you more contrast that everyone was talking about.

These are SO COOL! @-@ I think I'm literally drooling at the side of my mouth...

I feel like the first one on this last post that you posted is a little too fast for my taste. Is that the max amount of frames? I'd love to see the slice with a bit more staging to it--maybe pulling it out a bit more and having her start to move forward a little more before the slice? It might give us a better idea on what is about to happen / that she just sliced something once the animation is over.

These are so cool! They remind me of those Street Fighter games and what not :y:

You'll have to believe in yourself at some point in order to get where you want to go. :)

If I didn't get the job I would just like to know.  Some confirmation.  I'm trying to find a whole new life for myself, not just a job, so it's a biiig deal.

I don't know the company in question but I don't think most larger companies never tell you if you haven't been considered--only if you have. I do know that places like Square Enix scan their resumes and resumes that don't fill every requirement are tossed and not even looked at. (It's literally a machine that scans them, as I've heard.) I haven't gotten a job there yet because I'm still sitting here with my tail between my legs BUT, before I graduated I did talk to the HR Director for like an hour, twice. He and I became buddies. And you know the song: "It's not what you know, it's who you know." So wherever you go and look, try to get a hold of their HR or someone there that can pull some strings for you and get them to like you or get your resume through [whether you have all the credentials or not]! Because the hardest part is getting the interview. You'll slam it from there. :)

I didn't get to read everyone's replies so sorry if some of this is repeated information.

I'm actually new here! I just started pixel art two years ago and about a year in, someone told me there were two websites to go and get critique at so I could get better. First, they told me about Pixel Joint--and I quote: "You can try pixeljoint.com. They have a lot of people and activity over there but take everything they say with a grain of salt. A lot of them are elitists and they don't take kindly to newbies posting stuff." The second (and again I quote): "And than there's Way of the Pixel. It's not as active but the people there are really nice so as long as you can get someone to reply I'm sure you'll get lots of helpful critique!"

So, that is how I was introduced to each site  :P

I do agree with what someone brought up earlier: I didn't remember this site as much because the site itself is so bland looking. (The skin, I mean.) PJ is already very intimidating because of my introduction to it, but their black skin with a front page full of pixel art a lot better than mine was even more intimidating! It made me remember it, for better or worse.

It could be because I'm a web developer by trade, but, I do think I'd have remembered this site a lot more had it not been a default forums template. :(

Another thing that might be helpful is a forum area to introduce yourself. I just found this site again last night and I felt weird just posting out of no where... but there was no where to introduce myself! I did notice that a lot of people actually do say "I've been lurking and decided to post..." Maybe we can get some more of those lurkers out if we made them introduce themselves! ;)

Wow that looks A LOT better to me, personally! The tree is starting to come together as a whole now! :)

I feel as if to me, the rows of leaves are a little too 'clean' and 'neat' to be a real tree. (IE: They are falling too perfectly in rows.) However; if that is the game's style (which it could very well be) than a style is a style!

I have to start by saying this: I haven't done many animations so I'm certainly still a beginner in this area. However, I feel like what these 'actions' and 'poses' are lacking is some squashing-and-stretching and exaggeration of moves, to name two things.

Like I said I'm really not good enough in this area to try to explain (I'm afraid I may just confuse you) so I found an article that perhaps can do a better job than myself! http://www.digitalartsonline.co.uk/features/illustration/12-rules-of-animation/

Hi there.

I see someone else is using Kiwinuptuo's advice? ;)

Tutorials are awesome for beginning to understand how certain things work or should come together, however; like other's have suggested, it alone won't teach you everything about one subject.

A few things I notice about the new planks you posted:

You've now desaturated some of the planks so much that the wood doesn't even look like wood anymore (at least to me). Even dead wood, in comparison to the more saturated 'alive' wood next to it, would have a little more color. Tim showed before that he darkened some of your planks and I feel like maybe that was the same thing you are trying to do here. There's one major difference (besides the color choices): keep in mind human brains will always try to recognize patterns. In this case, you gave us a very clear pattern so the color difference doesn't help break the grid at all! You used single rows of color (IE: One row of wood is 1 color, the next row is another color). In comparison it almost looks like a spreadsheet ;)

Instead, try 'breaking up the pattern'. People use the same methodology for designing different tiles, IE: "Breaking up the grid" of games to try to eradicate patterns.

Essentially, think less of the texture at the moment and think more of these things: what pixel clusters will you use to signify the material you are trying to signify? How are you going to lay the pixel clusters out to eradicate as much of the grid as possible?
