Pixel Art / Re: C+C Darth Vader WIP
« on: December 21, 2010, 12:36:43 pm »
Remember that Vader's whole suit, particularly his, ah, helmet are quite shiny (although it depends what shot how shiny) therefore your image needs more hilites.
Also, hia front chest plate has lights and stuff on it that are coloured.
Adding on this, if you wanted to be a bit adventurous you might try some lighting similar to Super Star Wars: Darth Vader sprite sheet
I always felt that this sprite was really unique and interesting.

The helmet also comes across as just slightly skewed, the left (ours) side seems like it need an extra pixel or two in places to get rid of that problem on the top round part.  Also the lower legs are about half a head short. In the lines it kind of works, but it doesn't work at all with the semirealistic rendering. You might also want to try using a couple pixels around the eye/visor parts to create definition.

Anyway, I quite like this. Sorry for posting this after you said you were finished. ;)

I agree. I feel a little over my head here trying to salvage this instead of just doing it over, but I'll give it a shot. I went and bought a toy gun for reference, though I probably didn't use it as much as I should have.

I drew this, but I don't know if it's a step in the right direction:

Marginal changes like increasing the size of the gun/changing index finger rotation are easy fixes when I get to pixelling it. But I think I should maybe just start from scratch so I can get the hand rotation to be natural, it will probably be easier with my new toy gun at my disposal. I'm not sure yet.

This is really quaint and lovely. Maybe do a little more with the highlights on the side of the head that would be lit by the candle? Also, it seems skewed to me, moving the entire head/cleavage/all to the right seems to do the trick:

Pixel Art / [WIP] Pathologic Fanart
« on: December 01, 2010, 06:41:36 pm »

Hi, I'm working on this, and was wondering if anyone had any critique before I proceed further. The setting is from Pathologic, though the character is not. The structure at the back is the Polyhedron, read through this if you don't mind spoilers but want to hear what it's about.

What's the deal with artists for old CRPGs feeling the need to put a noise texture on everything? I'm mostly thinking of Dungeon Master-likes, Wizardry VI, Black Crypt, but non-first person ones too (unfortunately I can't think of any off the top of my head). Maybe I'm just over privileged because of this place and modern pixel techniques but I don't see how that became so pervasive and tied with that certain era and genre of games. Something about the late 80s/early 90s RPG nerd zeitgeist that caused them to search for distressing textures, or just a cultural memetic thing?

In any case, that kind of absolute dingyness doesn't happen much anymore.

It's courteous to post things in 1x as it makes things (slightly) easier to edit, though most people here do not use neolythic pixel tools.

I felt kind of bad only using the solid/dither tiles and not taking advantage of the plethora of others, but there's a strange kind of inconsistency (the resolution-mixing kind) between the two if you use the dither patterns for mixing in places and still use the symbols for shape...
