Pixel Art / Re: Calling All Critics!
« on: August 06, 2008, 04:06:51 am »
What AdamAtomic was saying in his first point was that you started with the lines and then colored in from there. The problem with this is that, in real life, things do not have outlines, but are in fact 3d objects in space that have forms and volume. The idea was, using only grayscale and no lines, you would eliminate both lines and color and start with just volume. When you just ended up keeping the lines and just painting over them, you sort of defeated the purpose because you were still using lines - it just wasn't visible in the end product.
Perhaps I'm wrong, though, and he had intended you to use your lines - I guess I should wait for him to comment before I assume his intentions.

The donkey's face looks much better and the added volume of the PCs definitely brings that part of the scene far more into the limelight. Great! Just one little nitpick that you can consider when working on the facial expression later - perhaps use more of your lighter colors in the donkey's eye, or more of your darker colors on the little white patch around the eye. This is just for readability's sake, and maybe it's just me - for just a second I thought the donkey's eye was closed and that he just had a bead of sweat on his eyelid.
Incredible work though, good luck at the compo!

I'm pretty sure Adam meant to use that exercise (drawing with only three shades of gray) as practice and to help you understand volumes/forms, not as a part of your final piece. Maybe as a starting point, but not actually as something used in the final, "blurred in" or anything like that. Also, you stuck pretty much to your original lines, which is a problem and defeats part of the purpose. You've shown that you have a fairly good concept of volumes, but all that is thrown to the wind when you use your original (fairly static) character design almost exactly. I think the idea was, start from scratch - try re-doing the way you did his exercise in the last post, but don't even think about your first version (you can forget using its lines) while drawing it.

In any case, your "three shades of gray" drawing is probably the best in this thread, which makes it clear that volumes are definitely not your weakest point - although it could use a lot of work. I don't think it would be a bad idea at all to begin with non-pixel art, drawing or painting in real life, in order to better understand many art concepts that you can later apply to pixel art. This is one place where a lot of information is really nicely organized and visually presented, and I'd recommend it if you're at all interested. It's also written by Arne, a fellow Pixelator!

Apologies if I sounded a bit harsh at any time, just trying to help out. :)

Okay then, if you insist on leaving the text the same, we'll talk about what you've just added.
I honestly cannot tell what the background is supposed to be. Bricks would be my first guess, but they read more as small rectangular buttons or pillows or something protruding from the wall. If you even look at reference pictures of bricks you'll notice that bricks have an alternating pattern, not one like yours. Also, making this background texture a light red somewhere in between the two shades of red in your title text only serves to make the title less readable. I don't mean to be rude, but it's actually a bit painful for me to try to read that text with the bright red repeating rectangles in back of it.
And what is below the "bricks"? Grass? A carpet? Are we viewing a cross-section of it from the side, or are we viewing it from above? It's entirely unclear as it appears to be one form, a big green rounded rectangular prism, with a little bit of texture on it. Making this a lot more readable is very important.
So even ignoring pixel-art techniques, at a basic art level this picture needs a lot of refining.
Finally, the knife below the logo looks very small and just slapped on. It's not an integral part of the title text or even the scene, it's just a knife sitting there below the text. It's also, as I mentioned before, so small that it's almost entirely unnoticeable.

It would probably help if you could tell us what it is exactly you've drawn when you post WIPs! That way we can be more specific in our help, and you can learn faster. And don't be afraid to spend some more time on your work, refining and reworking until you get exactly what you want.

I don't know if this really counts as pixel art yet. Not only is it just typography - which is sometimes considered an art - to me it just looks like a font you downloaded. And a pretty bad one at that. Look at the empty space between the letters "o" and "w", then between "w" and "d". It's completely different! That's some poor spacing which probably results from your using a bitmap font and increasing the size far too much. Also, the borders are so uniform, they look like they were added in Photoshop. Look at the crowding around the "w" and the annoyingly rounded edges of the borders.
But whether you did or did not make that text from scratch, the type is just plain old boring. The effect of using text that looks like it started out very small but was then increased in size to show the "pixels" is incredibly overused. Instead, why not shoot for something better? Make a cool logo. It's not like it hasn't been done before in pixel art: look at logos for any of your favorite classic RPGs! Perhaps you don't see your logo as boring, but either way I don't really see how the pixel-font style is relevant for a game called "chef showdown".

Beyond that, draw and post some actual pixel art to make this topic more interesting!! :)

General Discussion / Re: Official Off-Topic Thread
« on: July 20, 2008, 05:51:45 pm »
completely off-topic from everything, but i just wanted to post this somewhere.
for Mac users annoyed with the blurry zooming on Pixelation, under EVERY browser, there's a solution. go to System Preferences, Universal Access, and turn Zoom on. then click Options, uncheck "Smooth Images", and check "Use scroll wheel with modifiers to zoom". I've set mine to ctrl+scroll. you could also just use a keyboard shortcut if you like, but the scrolling is more versatile.
when you click images on Pixelation, they'll still be blurry. but at least now you can get a pixeltastic zoom at whatever size you like. only problem is you can't get exact ratios like 2:1 or 4:1, but as long as you don't mind that, it's a lifesaver.

Hello DanTheFlyingMan, I remember critiquing your art on SomethingAwful (under a different name, of course). Welcome to Pixelation!
Anyway, as of now your Dan character appears to either have a spotlight shining directly onto him, or he is close to reaching the light at the end of a tunnel. Unless this is the desired effect, you need to focus on fixing that flat shading. It seems like you're pulling things from your concept of "what things should look like" rather than the way they actually appear in life. For example, as Helm pointed out, your "reds are reds and greens are greens." This simply isn't the way light works.

The text was correct, it read Україна, or Ukraine (Ukrayina) in Ukrainian.

I think there's something very wrong with the eyes that I can't exactly pinpoint, but the issue is addressed very well in Ben2theEdge's edit and I think you should go in that direction.

Love it! Reminds me of the characters that are shown intermittently when an error occurs on the Game Boy Camera. Great style!
