Pixel Art / Re: My First Character Sprite - A Moorish Merchant

I like this.  ;D
There is fine tuning you could do to increase the readability. For example, the necklace has a few too many sharp pixels that could be smoothed out into antialiasing instead.
Make the feather bigger. Exaggeration is the best part of designing a character!
Also when you animate it you can make it bounce and that will pull a lot of attention to it.
Consider if you just did the silhouette of the character. All #000000 black. From this you can build simple exaggerated shapes. If you can make it recognizable from here, then filling in the details is easy.
Add cape flowing behind.

I think the shading looks fine.
It reads like her and it's a fraction of the size.
In terms of detail, you've reached the point of diminishing returns.

Usually grass doesn't exist like that in the woods.
The forest floor is typically leaves and branches of brown or black with moss or grass patches sitting on top.

So start with a brown base.
Add lighter brown dead leaves.
Then grey stones sticking in the dirt.
Then add the green growing here and there on top of it all.

Pixel Art / Re: How would you start ?

Draw how you feel inside.

If it is scary to start then use the lines and colors to channel your emotions.

Others will disagree with me, but I think this is the best place to start.

I finally finished a game.
It's taken since 2008. The game's been done since 2012. I'm only getting the guts to show people in 2020.

Hopefully my next game will be a bit faster in the development cycle...

I'm searching for an invisible kid so I can show her how much I love her.
Is she here?

Less is more. There should be restrictions just like there is in our art.

4 board restriction.
Too many sub-boards are convoluted and it divides focused attention.
Same if there's too many features.

"I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." -Bruce Lee
If we focus on doing one thing really well, we avoid being superfluous and people will love and respect it.
