General Discussion / Re: Altered Beast - a cluster study

Was that aimed at me?  Cos I have absolutely no idea what the heck that image is meant to explaining here.

I think that PPD misunderstood what you meant with the "I still don't get what this cluster thing is all about," thinking you were saying something like "I don't know what clusters are," instead of (what I assume is more like) an intended "I don't understand all of the fuss over these cluster edits."

Thanks. I have one question though, you said you were making a calculator game. So why use a colored palette for the scene?

Welcome to the age of the Color-Display graphing calculator.

(No, I'm not a spambot.)

@OP, the Hobbit holes are advancing nicely, but I think you may want to play around with your colors a bit, specifically working to make the colors contrast more; I, for example, have a hard time discerning what those chimneys are against the grass, and what form they have.  You could also make the rock path fit in better if the hobbit holes cast some sort of shadow onto them, since the sun IS shining on them, after all.  Overall, nice improvement thus far.

I think it's smart to keep in mind that even if you steal resources up until project completion, you won't be able to really feature it anywhere credible; copyright rules "may not apply to you in Russia" (which is actually very incorrect), but any major outlet that finds evidence of thievery will turn down your game in a flash -- many minor outlets will, too.

Even if this is for a personal project, it's still a good idea to not steal resources without permission; in the professional game industry, stuff like this doesn't fly.  It's good to get into the habit of treating ownership of resources with respect.

I'll be happy. Alas my code is perfectly safe, unless you understand expressions like
Code: [Select]
get FileName |c:[T:@4.utf8 L:@4.ul D:@L.y @Xs] [[T D] @Xs,r]

(This just looks like poorly designed code to me.)

EDIT:

Based on the post after mine, I think it's fair to say that it's not even worth reasoning with you -- it's not even worth another post to say so.  I'm perplexed as to why you're still trying to justify what is wrong, however, given that you're not listening to anything we're saying anyways.  ???

Make sure you're using references for things like this.  Here's a quick one I found:

Since I assume that while you're trying to stick with a cartoony style, you're also trying to base it on reality, some errors some into the spotlight after looking at the reference:

- The eyes are basically on the side of the face, whereas your are near the front.
- The Psuedo-chin (since I'm assuming it's not called a "chin" on a snake...) is pretty pointed and follows the tapered-bullet design of the head, whereas yours is pretty broad and flat.
- Nostrils.  Huge ones.  Most snakes have them. ;)

Well, I got tired of battling this Sendori thing, so a second fresh install later and everything's running perfectly again.

Ashbad, just out of curiosity, how did you get this thing, uh, "installed"?

I'd love to say I had some sort of idea, but to tell the truth, it beats me  :-[  I'd suspect that at one point I installed something slightly shady, and that somehow in turn installed this as well.

I'd really be tempted to tell you to abandon Windows to the profit of Linux, but that would be bitter flavoured and it's not my intention.
The only help I can give you is a link to a pertinent suggestion from google: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_other-protect_scanning/how-to-remove-sendori-malware/a35e5c4b-63c5-4a59-abab-669a76717ed9

Indeed, I followed those steps, and while it subdued it for the time being, upon next reboot everything was back to square one again.  A fresh OS install zapped it, though :)

As for the linux suggestion, no need to suggest installing something that I already have running on two other computers at home!

Pixel Art / Re: Cityscape - First post, critique me?

Other possible suggestions aside, I think your city could use a bit of a spruce-up in the color department; the sky's gradient is very abrupt, and the blue undertones make these feel more like ruins rather than a bustling, glorious city.  Also, cut down to 7 colors.

Any reason for such the huge magnification?  If it's intended, I'd ditch the AA and go for less (and cleaner) colors -- the AA at this magnification is a bit overwhelming.

A good step forward!  :) I suggest that you still probably drop all internal black outlines, since they are flattening her a bit; the same advice goes towards the other characters.

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP][C+C] Lava Serpent[EDIT 2]
« on: December 15, 2012, 12:08:15 am »
- The new, bright lava is nice, but the rocks don't reflect nearly enough light, considering how much light the lava is radiating.  Quick color-only edit that demonstrates how much better the rocks would fit in with more contrast:

- The rocks look rather smooth and round; sharp, abrupt edges, and more flat surfaces will help portray rocks more convincingly.

- It feels like it's missing something, partially because it seems a bit imbalanced, compositionally; a lot is going on in the bottom of the piece, whereas the top is bare in comparison.

- Many banding issues -- I'd read this: http://www.pixel.schlet.net/

From there, I'd say to work on details, but these areas are much more fundamental, and there's no point in detailing something that could use more underlying improvement.

Nice job so far!

General Discussion / Re: Read the Rules, then introduce yourself here.
« on: December 14, 2012, 01:44:33 am »
I never introduced myself!  I feel so deprived of an enriched newbiehood :(

I'm Ashbad, and I've been making pixel art for 6 months or so, now, with a huge break over the summer and early autumn.  I've been a member here for about that long, and I've learned a great deal from the myriad of impressive artists here.  Pixel art was my first jump into being a practicing artist, and now I'm working on my general drawing skills as well.  I'm definitely not the best artist, nor the most advanced, nor the most seasoned by any means, but I'm willing to learn through much practice (when I have time and motivation -- hard classes and sleeping problems help make a deficit in that motivation component at times.)

I'm 16 (as of posting this, soon to be 17), and I have the goal of advancing in my general art skills enough in order to take an AP Art class next year in school, before I hit college.  When I get into college, I'll probably at least attempt some sort of art minor along with Electrical Engineering/Compiter Engineering -- might be a hard goal, but I'm determined.
