Nice edits! :) I like the suggestion of fixing the AA and the lighting on the opposite legs.  The mouth edit, however, seems very awkward.  I think a bett anatomical fix would be to shorten the snout and lower the eyes down.  I'll play around with it to see what I can make of it.

That open drawer looks like it's missing a side to it, since you can see past into the other side.  In addition, the wall with (what looks to be) barbed wire and the wall with the drawers seem to come together pretty abruptly.  Besides these design and detail issues, the actual pixeling is quite nice.  Nice job :D

There are no sides to the drawer, because it's a morgue.

Oops, m'bad :P OP, feel free to disregard that part of my critique.

wow you've improved a lot since your last attempt at these ponies

Thanks! :D  I've learned a lot since then.  And learned a lot through revising this work ^_^  I studied tons of pixel art since then, and read many insights on what makes pixel art good, as opposed to making it look like a rough piece that's merely composed of pixels.

What I think I need to work on next is creating a good palette, and some intermediate and advanced color theory.  I'm pretty weak on that, as this sprite is pretty bright and saturated.

I think it looks great! :D  As for some things I noticed:

- Some buildings have black outlines on the west and north borders, and some have bright ones.  I would stay consistent with one style of bordering (I'd probably suggest making them all bright as opposed to all black)

- The water looks like it needs a bit of work; It looks like it still needs to be brought from the sketch stage into the refined pixel phase.  Same with that little hut and the sand next to it.

- The cars seem to have a few weird outlines near the hood, where the border is more than a single pixel thick.  I assume that was to create some sort of waning look; I suggest that to achieve the same effect (but make it looks a bit cleaner), you simply make the outline more curved (at a very slight curve angle)

- Some of the buildings have smaller detail, some don't.  The pink building doesn't fit with the brick one, because the pink one is almost a flat color, and the brick one has.. bricks :P which add detail.  And on top of that, a (really cool) mural painting.  I noticed this in some smaller elements as well; for example, the vent thing that comes out of the brick building stands out way too much, because it's also a flat color while the brick is not.

Among a few other things.  I still think it needs another pass or two, but this first revision is really a great starting place; it's already mostly done.  It just needs the fixes and details.  On an unrelated note, one detail I really like in your little city is the Bank.  The letters seem a bit crude and blocky, but that view through the window that exposes a teller's counter adds a really nice effect to it :D

Haha looks awesome  :D
Our little one is getting into that show always makes me lol.
I think it goes well with the style.
If you want crits then nothing stood out as nasty when I first looked but I guess the mouth looks slightly off.
Are the eyes supposed to have that agressive look?
Back rear leg should have less light to make it recede and since it wouldn't normally be catching any directly light.

Thanks ^_^ I personally love the show as well.  Well, that might be a bit obvious, actually, considering I'm making so many pony pixels :P

I agree that something about the mouth is still a bit weird.  I'm going to try and play with it to see what I can do with it.  The eyes are indeed supposed to look agressive like that :) And for the back legs, I think you're right, there's more lighting on them than on the front leg, so I guess I definitely need to tone it done some.

Thanks!

Pixel Art / Rainbow Dash -- the Art of Being Awesome

After many hours of experimentations/improvements, I finally made this:

I did a decent amount of anti-aliasing (perhaps a bit too much; but I think it looked better than without), and finally learned what banding is and how to fix it (after reading an excellent tutorial on the matter by our own admin, Helm) through this revision process.  The color count is pretty high, my estimate is somewhere around 40 colors.  Early revisions had 24, then moved to 14, but then I decided to stop worrying about keeping a super small palette, and see what I could get out of what I had available.

As for what the revision process entailed:

C+C would be most welcome. :)

Good:

- It tiles rather well.  Nice job on that!
- The color base shade is a nice choice of green; not too bright, not too dismal.

What needs to be improved:

- You might want to double the amount of grass strands in the tile; it looks very bare right now, as if there's a green carpet and a few strands are coming out of it.
- You'll also want to add a little more contrast between the brighter two shades and the darker one.  That way you'll get better grass blade readability.
- You might also want to consider straightening out the blades a bit to make them more erect in posture; then it's also easier to fill in the space with more blades as well.
- Finally, you might want to let up on the brightest color there, some; with so few blades, it dominates the middle green color.  However, this might get fixed automatically by adding more blades and straightening them, so I wouldn't worry about this until you make the other fixes.

Not bad at all for a very beginner pixel artist!  Much more impressive than my first grass tile (or even, first few months of attempted grass tiles...) :P

General Discussion / Re: Exercises to improve with Pixel Art?

Been taking up these suggestions the past few days, and it's been helping (or at least, from what I can tell :P)  Thanks for the tips, I'll eventually report back in this thread and share what I did to improve specifically, once I do a bit more to make it worthy of sharing.

Yeah, I'm thinking the eyes need to be at least 1 pixel further away (2 or 3 at max, though), and I think you're also right about the head needing to come down a bit (from what I saw in your suggestion edit) -- not sure if I like the idea of the pointy chin, though; it'll be more anatomically correct, but it might take away some of the "d'aww" effect from the pudginess of the face.  I'll work around with it later today and post my next edit taking in all of the new suggestions you guys gave :)
