the alien stands out too much from the background.
No, he doesn't? ??? I think he stands out just right in brightness.

However, I think the colors are much too saturated. If you desaturated the background a bit, you could make the character stand out so much more. Right now, it feels a bit as if he's fighting for attention with the background, colorwise. Subtlety can be very valuable.

Everything in the background is terrestrial, so there's nothing about it right now that says galactic to me, except for the alien. Is he on Earth or another planet? If it's the latter, I suggest changing the colors to make it look alien. You've already established that they're trees and bushes, which leaves some room for creativity, even if he's on Earth.

Your color ramps also seem random in how they change in hue and brightness. If the connection between two colors is not clear, it can make the image seem disjointed. Your brain has to try to figure out if they're parts of the same ramp or an entirely separate ramp.

Otherwise, I really like the design. Especially the asymmetrical head. :)

Pixel Art Feature Chest / Re: Making a game :o [ Project Deadbird]

His shoulders should move because he's moving his arms, not the other way around. I think his feet need to be closer to the center. They also bend oddly when he lifts them, which makes it look like they're moving in an arc. His biceps are too bright and don't really look like they're a natural part of the arm.

Edit! ;D

Otherwise, I really like this. The bright gray you're separating your icons with drowns them out a bit, though.

Edit: Experimented with the frame delays.

I really don't see why everyone likes that idleworm tutorial so much. My main gripe with it isn't that it's exaggerated, it's that it only applies to cartoon characters with very big (and strong) feet. The reason the character bobs is because it pushes itself up on its toes. In reality, the bobbing is due to simple trigonometry. When the legs are spread, the vertical component is shorter than when the legs are together.

Here's a more realistic take on it.

Edit: Oops, their legs got way shorter. :D

Looks like you're just moving parts of it around. Don't be afraid to draw each new frame from scratch, or at least polish it a lot more so that it's not just big blocks of pixels shifting back and forth. It'll make the animation look much more fluid.

Very enlightening, and your edit is a huge improvement. ;D

I don't think the regular dithering pattern works, though, since the limited palette makes the rows of pixels stand out quite a bit. It looks particularly bad where it comes together around her cheekbone. I think something more random would make it look more organic. The right eye is also still too far off to the right.

Otherwise, I'm always impressed when someone manages to render things well using EGA colors. So in conclusion, :0'

For me, it's simply the combination of being busy (vacation, work, moving, etc.) and a broken monitor and tablet pen. I'm still pixeling on a daily basis, it just looks like crap (at the moment, anyway! ;D).

Look at EvilEye's edit and how he drew the head in relation to the neck. I also made an edit to show you how to shade it more realistically, and it's pretty much just EvilEye's advice with shading. It's not entirely accurate, but it's a step in the right direction. Use those references! :)

I think I'd also change the third darkest blue so that it's a more gradual step between the neighboring colors in the ramp.

You've made a lot of progress, but I think you need to stop refining it until you get the volumetrics right. The nose, left cheek and the area around her eyes look flat. I suggest looking into facial planes to get a better idea of how to shade the face as a collection of basic shapes. This book might be useful.

I second the suggestion to look at references. Even if you can't find something that matches this piece, you can try combining photos from different angles (two images = 3D, right?), and simply sketching random faces from photos might still give you a better idea of how to shade her.

Also, you could still benefit from moving closer to EvilEye's edit since she still doesn't have much of a chin.

All I really see is Jad's run animation and not much of yours in there. Maybe it would have been better if you'd tried animating completely on your own first? I think it would have had more of your style in it that way.

Fool also tends to use more realistic proportions, so I'd shrink the head or enlarge the body.

Plenty of Fool's pieces have characters with oversized heads (usually kids, but sometimes he draws adults this way too) so I think it fits.
