Pixel Art / Re: Shmup mockup

with those rocketpacks being mentioned, I might also point out that those characters must have very hot feet looking at how close they are to the jet flames.... I think there's likely to be a third potential light source :)

Oh go on then.. I'm feeling in a generous and giving mood - even though Christmas isn't celebrated here ;)

E5 looks like a nice shaped box.. doesn't need to be too big, pixel art is pretty small in size anyway.

Pixel Art / Re: WIP - Wood Laminate floor
« on: November 12, 2009, 12:53:10 pm »
Must admit, I quite like that swirling wood-grain pattern you've got going on the flooring too.

However, my only concern is in your perspective. The tiles/floor boards on the far left and right are much wider than those in the centre...

General Discussion / Re: Conceptual Pixel Art

I remember also seeing (on youtube - before it got blocked from China) a guy that made piel art stuff using loads of Rubik's cubes. Fairly impressive stuff given the pretty dreadful 6 colour palette.

Cross-stich / Tapestry has been around for a very long time, and that is almost identical in essence to pixel art. Wehre we use restricted palettes, they are limited by the colours of thread they have.

Mosaics date back even longer - though seldom as grid-like as pixel art.

General Discussion / Re: Official Off-Topic Thread

Not that I sketch people, but if I did, I don't think I'd bother 'asking permission' to do so. Why should you? You are simply drawing things in your current view - in the same way as people might catch you in a photograph they are taking. If the person looks agitated from it then sure.. scrap it and move to someone else. Jeez.. there are enough CCTV cameras and stuff around these days - and if anything there is more reason to be uncomfortable by them capturing your full likeness and actions rather than some bumpy train ride sketch by someone passing time on his/her commute to work.

Challenges & Activities / Re: Hexquisite Corpse Suggestion Thread
« on: November 09, 2009, 04:33:47 pm »
wat wat? I think you understand the pic I made wrong.

The different coloured blocks are seperate corpses, which then get combined. The numbers in the middle is amount of colours.

I think I understand what conceit was trying to say.. hopefully this diagram represents his comments.

The coloured hexagonal areas are individual collabs, each using a 16 colour palette. The grey tiles in between them form a 'bridge' and only those tiles utilise both (or all three) neighbouring palettes (as shown by the colour indicators in the middle of the grey hexes)

The grey 'bridge tiles' can be done as a separate challenge to link a couple of hex collabs. Perhaps where anyone can attempt them and the best tiles from that challenge are then used as the bridge tiles.

This way, any collab can use any palette and you don't have to worry about repeating a palette to keep the colour count in a more central collab down. In your diagram, although your central one has 48 colours, that would mean that several collabs around it need to a lot of the same colours. This is perhaps a little limiting from a design point of view, and perhaps less of a challenge than using a fresh unfamiliar palette.

Archived Activities / Re: HEXQUISITE CORPSE COLLAB II - DONE!

I thought I'd upload these images which show all the individual tiles and the borders they had to work with to make the tile.
(Green indicates an empty tile at that time. The absence of a border on any edge is because it is at the edge of the board)

Hopefully I got the actual creation order correct enough that the given borders are as they were - sorry if there are any errors in that.

I love the fact that the whole things appears to emminate from the brain in the center as a weird and wacky collection of its bizarre imagination. Also (nice one Lackey) anything with a little iso-wizard doing his magic somewhere in it gets a big thumbs up from me ;)

WOW. Simply breathtaking. So many things there completely beyond whatever I had imagined they would be. Congrats everyone involved on a fantastic collab!

My first tile, I hated that palette but began to enjoy the challenge of it. Some of the tiles here use the given palette so effectively and beautifully I am in awe.

Got to say though, I love Arachne's little surfing elephant in his shiny wetsuit and the grotesque alien thing, Vierbit's cottages and pirate ship, Lackey's spaceship, Carnivac's beast, Tomic's stag, Mush's dogfight, Setz's head and skulls... urghh.. so many lovely details everywhere....

Jeez.. the last few are taking longer to get done than the rest of the whole board took!

Come on guys, I'm sure I'm not the only one eager to see the curtain drop and the finished piece revealed...
