Great response, Night. Thanks for taking the time. I believe I understand all that.
It's a good use of this thread for us to take a minute to ask questions and learn from each other, rather than just an image dump.
So, I almost never use the smudge tool. Need to stop under-utilizing it. Might make that a goal for my next thing. Good reminder.

hey Night, if you don't care, would you please give us a quick instructional on your edge painting tech thus far.
The horse's edges/muscle definition is the first thing I noticed when i saw your above pic.
Are you painting large soft strokes then sharpening up one side with a smaller harder brush, are you using selections, etc?
Edge stuff is something I'm very interesting in right now.

dennis, final DLC for Dark Souls 3 is out, if haven't jumped in yet. highly recommended

oded, good start -a little impact vibrate to help communicate force --few rock chunks being tossed into air briefly as the french fries pop up
