Try some secondary ambient light gently illuminating the bottom left side.
The nose/mouth just looks like a nose, had to zoom to figure it out. The red mouth interior red is distracting.

If you did this well, the resulting peice would have a nice use somewhere, I'm sure.

I think it should be animated - have a bunch of guys pushing together iso blocks to make a space invader or some other stereotypical pixel thing, not a 50/50 dither pattern, people will just think "checkboard" when they see it. Also, I think adding detail to the cubes, like cracks, does detract from the overall effect. Why complicate it? It's a common downfall to clutter in unnecessary detail, don't fall into that trap. Your concept will get dilluted. Go for some less bland shading

Hair isn't for beginners, that's for sure, but if you're brave ad not afraid to fail, I agree with McClane, more definition could save this peice.

As a concept for this char, he could stay a non-descript white marshmellow blob but have incredibly cool hair with cunning detail, just a funny contrast. Could be good practice for ya. The chops are too big/fat. The glinty sheen isn't executed well. Reference more anime pics, like sailor moon and all that crap. Those anime guys do the shiny hair really well. Give him some pimped out shades instead of hollow orifices. I'm not sure what facial expression you're going for - he looks inbred . . . no, he reminds me of Stimpy in a daze. Hope that's helpful, g.

Interesting. That's a building I'd rather not enter. And I'd hate to see the exit!

Welcome to the wild wild world of pixel art. Not a bad first try. Here's your requested crit: It's basically mirrored, which is usually a form of cop-out, not saying it is here, because buildings are typically symmetrical. He's pillow-shaded, which means you took the least intuitive approach possible to shade your character. Good shading is vital, it allows your viewer to get a sense of the form of something/how they occupy space. Your shading indicates your light source is the same as the viewer's point of view, which tells me you didn't even consider light at all when doing this. Light is yours to command, bend it to your will.

That's just a few things for ya, no sense in overloading you with information you can easily find in pixel tutorials online anyway. GO HERE.

There's only so much one can validly critique without knowing the intent/purpose of a peice.

General Discussion / 32/64 colour generic palette
« on: January 23, 2009, 03:52:51 pm »
As a suggestion, if there's to be official community development of a 64 color palette, it probably constitutes it's own feature, so it doesn't get lost in this thread.

And Ai has already started. Way to go, Ai. I can't really decipher whether a palette is quality by seeing it so jumbled up, so I did a real quick job organizing it a little :

I still can't really comment on it until I use it for something, but it seems useful, despite some redundant shades.

**edit This palette has no pure black or white. At this point in my pixel "career" I'm still not sure if this is a good or bad thing. Black is nice for voids, though. I tend to really value shades I can use for dark subtle detail in backgrounds, etc. In my current Meteor Boy project, I don't have this and it bugs me.

exDNA, I don't think that's real pixel art. It appears you rasterized an iso vantage point vector drawing in PS, with, like Souly brought out, anti-aliasing still checked. What's the total color count? If something like this was pixelled I'd say no more than 12-16 would be alright.

The AA is what gives it away, it not being manual. I'm guessing you did manually draw "NICCOLO'S", though, it's not AA'ed.

If it were pixelled I'd say that it's nice overall, yet a tad plain. Also, for a beginner starting out, doing iso may not be a good way to learn the intricacies of pixel art. Iso is bound by rules and regulations and I'd be afraid that would cap ones gamut of exploration into the artform itself.

Sounds like a colossal task, and one that would be very difficult to finally determine as complete and finished. Seems like a person would want to always tweak it from time to time. So many colors, how could you not.

Does it have to be a binary friendly number? Why not 47, for example? I too, default to numbers like 8, 16, 32, 64, etc when thinking about such things, but are these rules applicable in this situation?; Why an arbitrary limit?

And isn't 64 a bit much? What low-color games use 64 colors at once? That's enough for full gradation in smaller more monochromatic/less colorful sprites/objects, maybe not a big gradiently shaded sunset bg for instance, but certainly smaller things.

A 64 colour generic palette would in deed be daunting to do, but I guess overall not as hard as sorting out a very good 16 colour palette.

How would you do that?

A newbie? I don't buy it. This sprite has a level of style that a newbie almost always lacks. The animation is fitting; good continuity. There are some animation critique points that jump out at me, but I think you're done with aren't you?

I really hate it when art needs an intent or purpose.
I mean a doodle is a doodle and a avatar is just an avatar, doesn't need a story behind it.

Souly, don't be silly. Art always has a purpose. A lot of art may not aspire to anything grand; just being repititous practice, though. I never said everything needs a full backstory. But here, Tuna was attempting to mimic this CD cover in a totally different style - pixel art. Once he's explained that, we're now empowered to critique it more effectively are we not?

I like it, Tuna. Good translation to pixels. I'd like to see it a little bigger. Just because it's a neat-looking character; I'd like to see more detail. But there's definitely merit in pixeling this small and it retaining recognition. And I agree on the composition issue, it does seem like it's sunken down on the canvas, compare your use of space to the original cover. Easy fix. Nice!
