Pixel Art / Mandy the Manticore
« on: December 01, 2006, 05:35:43 am »
A generic manticore. Was originally going to be for the chimera challenge until I managed to think of something more in line with the spirit of the challenge.
Most features of the non-winged form (the winged form strikes me a rather pointless, may a well be a dragon in that case).
Only real lack is the single row of teeth (rather than three rows), but I couldn't think of how to pack that many teeth in with out making the already over large mouth more so, or making the teeth piffling little needles, but it's supposed to be a man eater, not a fish eater. An ideas on this would be appreciated.

This took far too long.

2^4 - 2 colours.

Technique:
  • Roughed sketch the line work at a large size with tablet
  • Block colours
  • Scaled down to pixel size
  • Pixel work

EyeCraft: The thing on its wrist is meant to be the rescue thong of the flail.

Muted the highlight on the flag.
Tried to consolidate the specular highlight on the metal and shading on the rope into a single more vertical source.
Tried to dejaggify the shaft of the escargots fork.
Used the free colour to add another flesh shade.
Defined edges of tentacles against shadowed area.

An evil communist monster!

2^4 colours.

Too large and I got lazy and cheaped on the texturing (and it shows). I didn't consider the size till I was already heavily invested in it.

Still haven't got around to finishing coding a proper gallery, so I've hacked out a cheap static gallery. As well as being no web programmer, I am also no web designer, but hopefully it is functional and bugless. Within that context any crits would be good.

Also reworked some old pieces a little when seeing the heinous colour counts.

I stole the javascript zooming code from here, I presume its still the stuff ZeroByte made available (all links I could find to the original posting were dead), and that its okay for me to use, if not please let me know.

Lelle:
I'm obviously not understanding you. The only thing that really should be shadowed is the right arm by the head/torso. An edit might help clarify.

Blick:
I shifted the top of the flag up into view.
I can't see how to dejaggify the escargots fork without AAing to the background, which is evil.

Tweaked colours a bit more, mainly desaturated the steel and shell colours. Fixed top banner connector.

Sexy stuff.

I'm especially fond of the lower set of Turtles in the first post (the other Turtles are a bit cutesy for my tastes) and Jeri (good cute in this case).

You're animation skills look very solid.

Crits:
  • The head bangers are rather pillow shady
  • The cutesy character select turtles are rather bland in colouring. Some hue variation over the shading gradient would liven it up a lot. Also the skin outline and shadow colours are very close, making the outline barely visible in shadowed areas (i.e. left sides of legs).

Shading should further define shape on top of what the line art provides to further devlop the piece's volume.

The shading you've used doesn't provide much information beyond what the line art provides.

Here's a quick edit:

Used a simple "ball-shading" method:
  • Defined the difusely lit regions
  • Added deeper shadows further from the light normal
  • Added specular highlights

pkmays:
Shadows - there has been further blending of the shadows. Are they still too harsh?
Outlines - hopefully there shouldn't be too many jaggies left now.

Base pixelling done. Pending corrections re C&C (please):

2^4 - 1 colours.

The red stripes on its flesh are supposed to be war paint. Not sure if thats clear.

I've still got one palette index to spare, any suggestions where I should put it?

Thanks Ryona.

Still far from completion.
Mostly palette refinement (perhaps a little overconsolidated).
Some small amount of pixelling.

2^4 - 2 colours.
