Pixel Art / Dance animations
« on: February 17, 2009, 11:57:31 am »
For the pixel joint challenge (which I started myself -_-) I want to make a few dance animations.
All featuring the same character probably (me), but doing a different dance.
I really have almost no animation experience, and I am also not an anatomy expert, so its really time for me to learn it :)

I am limited to 8 frames exactly 1/10 of a second long.

At the moment I have one little dance move, which consists of 4 frames being mirrored to get 8 frames. I do have a few non mirrored dance moves in mind too.

Please tell me what you think, as well as on animation, color, anything :)

I'm quite confident GGale lacks any such feature. We'll have to do it the hard way.  :(
Um...what exactly is the "hard way"? I'm kind of confused where to input the hex/deci values mentioned in this thread.

You should enter the RGB values (those that should be divideable by 8) in here:

Thanks for your explanation! I wont work with it, but I always like these kinds of background information!
Also, I don't think using the correct palette is very important. Of course, you can for example indeed not use full white in the simple version, but who says you could on the gameboy itself? Screen settings make the difference (a lot actually)
Or am I wrong and do all LCDs(which I do not know much about, I have a thick oldschool CRT) show colors exactly the same?

The correct is indeed weird. It contains a lot of colors of numbers not divideable by 8. I would like to hear the idea behind that, I am interested :)
I do understand how the simplified works, but I believe I am better off just drawing, and correct my (not too much anyway) colors manually at the end :)

Thanks saimo and Johnny, ill figure it out now :). Ill hope to make some sprites and tiles soon :)

I do get it now.
But I also need to know how to work with 'm. I do not know how to select these colors. At first I work with RGB, but if I divide 256 by 32 I should have the right thing right? the number every number should be able to get divided by. But, that would make it very hard creating colors. I would almost have to manually select every color. Is there a full (quite large) palette I can use? Or any (free, not pro-motion) tool that enables me to only use those colors? Or is there an easy way to select the right colors when working with MSpaint, MTpaint or GraphicsGale?
Thanks in advance.

I still do not get the rgb555 thing. How do I know if the colors id like to use are useable on the GBC?

General Discussion / Portfolio websites
« on: February 07, 2009, 01:29:24 pm »
I noticed that a lot of people here have a nice portfolio website.
I have started on things a few times myself as well, but I never get to finish 'm, and they are never how I want it.

How did you guys make your potfolio websites

Did you first do a lot of sketches, color tests? Anything you can show?  ::)
From scratch written CSS files and html, or did you have a base?  :mean:
How do you keep it updated? Do you have PHP scripts that allows you to add pages without having to manually edit everything, or uploading everything on FTP?  ???
Or wasn't it even build by you, and did you only put in your content?  :blind:

Please tell about it, and show your links to your portfolio websites :)

At the moment I am experimenting with a CMS (drupol) and an (slightly modified) premade template.

Pixel Art / Re: Walking Sprite
« on: February 07, 2009, 01:09:11 pm »
Its the hips that should go up and down, and therefore automatically the head goes up and down too.

Why is his body that tall, and are his legs so short? And why are his legs alwayd bend? Try walking like that yourself.
An in my opinion important part of drawing is how the feet are being used. If you draw feets, your animation might get better, or easier to understand what is happening.

You have colored those arms and legs differently, but it makes no sense. You only animated half of the cycle, so there is no right or left arm anyway. Whats the use of having those 2 differently colored, and why not make the full cycle?

Quote
I wouldn' t use a stickman...You can't know which leg is closer to the observer, same with legs... I would use a 5 colour guy... red and dark red for the arms, black for torso and head, blue and dark blue for legs, the closer leg to the observer the brighter...
Think before you exactly do what other people say. It might help you someday understanding what people say. As I said earlier, make it YOUR artwork, not ours.

Success

Pixel Art / Re: Indifferent Clown Wip

I wonder how he moves his hand so quick ;)

Collage or not, it is not the idea to have the idea behind something good, it is the idea to SHOW the idea behind something good. You must put very much effort in showing that this is supposed to be a collage if you want this to look like one.

Also, I found the idea that he is getting covered by the clown firing on the baddies that are off the canvas on the right side very funny. However, that would make the clown getting shot from the other side ;)
