Pixel Art / Re: Bad Artist in need of criticism and correction
« on: January 09, 2014, 12:38:55 am »
Well, if you want to learn how to draw people, you'll need to look at YouTube tutorials, websites and/or books that explain proper proportions, anatomy, drawing realistic and interesting poses, etc. A lot of people who get into pixel art, myself included, have the double challenge of trying to learn how to draw at the same time as dealing with the special challenges and restrictions of pixel art. It's like trying to learn how to sing in Japanese, without knowing the language. It would be easier to focus on one thing (e.g. just practice anatomy drawing on paper, or singing in your native language), but I guess it's more fun for some people to do both.

I think if you watch a few YouTube tutorials on drawing the human body, either realistically or stylistically, you will learn very fast and get a much better foundation than having someone on this forum explain the fundamentals.

As you learn more, it's easier to come back and ask for specific things, like "how can I improve his hands" or "how do I add shadows to a face without a nose"  ;D

1 and 3: Again, a case of me forgetting the basics. Thanks for correcting those!

2: I agree that a warm yellow works better than blue as a highlight. But I already changed this in my latest edit (the one titled "better?"), so I was a bit surprised that you would make the point. But nevertheless, it's always nice to arrive at the same conclusion separately   ;D

3a: Same as above. You're suggesting something I already did in the very image you're editing. But the important thing is that we agree. Now I will compare our two new pinks with increased saturation. Yours is even brighter, with greater saturation than my updated version.

4: This is a very interesting bit, and it's exactly the kind of stuff I'm trying to come to terms with and understand. You see, I was looking at this piece by iLKke and trying to understand what he's doing. I'm talking about the small planet in particular, not so much the robot. He moves from bright green to a warm and less warm brown, then to a dark cyan with low saturation, moves back to green, then to purple, two dark browns and the two darkest colours are shades of purple. Now, if you look at the robot from a distance, it basically looks grey. But the planet has a very interesting texture, and I'm trying to understand how people make this work. I do feel like I'm getting closer, but I can't quite come to grips with it. Notice he's jumping back and forth between higher and lower saturation, warmer and colder colours, as he moves from light to darkness.

Thanks again!

I think I've used too much pink light from the crystal on its forhead. Makes his head seem much flatter than before. Will fix that.

Thank you both for your fast and insightful replies! I'm a bit obsessed with this piece at the moment, I just want to make sure I'm headed in the right direction before I can put it down. Probably doesn't make sense.

There's one colour that forms the basis for the whole piece, which I can't change. It's part of some PJ challenge, and the colour is the second brightest pink, RGB 177, 99, 162. It's neither here nor there, but if I follow cauli's advice of making one end of the spectrum high saturation and the other low, then I just need to decide whether the greens should be high or low saturation. And as you can see below, the green doesn't seem to work with high saturation.

Good point about the lower horns touching the upper horns, btw. I keep forgetting the basics! I will clean everything up later, including the shape of the horns, the grooves and ridges, the wrinkles above the brow, etc.

Pixel Art Feature Chest / GR#155 - Experiment with Colors - Shading
« on: January 07, 2014, 11:28:39 pm »
Hey guys, I'm doing some colour experiment that I'm hoping someone can help me with. I'm trying to figure out how to work with complementary colours, in this case trying to work with a colour scale with both pink and green. It's something I've noticed other people doing for some time, but I don't really understand how it works. I've read up on color theory, and I understand how people sometimes use complementary colours to neutralize each other, but it seems like there's a lot of art that uses complementary colours to just give more depth and interesting textures.

Here's what I'm working with.

Maybe it needs higher contrast, but I'm afraid the saturation will burn people eyeballs and make it harder to combine pink and green on the same scale.

I'd happily receive C&C regarding the shape of the head itself, and my pixelling technique, but I'm primarily looking for advice in regards to my use of colours. I'm hoping to avoid a normal linear colour scale from a cold and dark to a bright and warm shade of purple.

I'm fairly sure it's supposed to be a black, white and brown bear.

Nice.

Or go the opposite route. Make a robot in terrible shape, who needs every bit of rest the player affords him.

But yeah, I would say that a body bob would make no sense and take away from the idea that it's a robot. A less silly version of jahasaja's animation would probably be better. Maybe include a tiny bit of torso rotation for the sake of making it dynamic and pretty.

Nice start! You're right that the latest change looks odd. Do you have a picture of a bear you're working off, or are you doing this from your memory? I guess the body at least is from this picture.

I've tried to do a quick edit, even though I don't think I've drawn a bear since I was a child. Now, I'm not saying that my version is good (in fact, my bear ended up looking more like a raccoon than anything), I'm just trying to illustrate that your bear's snout needs to be more elongated and it's almost as if you're missing the whole bottom jaw of your bear. I'm not a very good artist, but this edit hopefully explains more than I could do with words.

Finally, I would like to say that it's very rare to see a polar bear surrounded by trees, as they tend to stick.... near the north pole, where there's a distinct shortage of trees. [Fun fact: this is actually how the polar bears got their name. The north pole.  :P] Sorry, I didn't mean to be snarky. It just seems easier to keep this as a "black bear" than to change it into a polar bear.

I don't think you need to add more snow to the trees. Wind and sunlight will reduce the snow on trees from time to time, even in an otherwise snow-covered landscape. I do agree that the three trees look like they're on a single line, which makes it all seem less natural.

Thanks for the feedback! The tiles are 20 x 20 pixels. I actually wanted to practice with tiles on this piece, since it's meant to be a game mockup and all. And originally I intended the water to be completely blank and reflective like a mirror, but it doesn't really make sense to get rescued by a SAR chopper if you're just floating around in a quiet lake on a nice summer's day, so I decided to really make the water very dynamic. And drawing stormy waters is something I've never done before.

Come to think of it, perhaps I should change the sky and the trees to give a greater sense of danger. Make things more dramatic.

Is there a way I can improve my water tiles without resorting to calm waters?

Looking good. But unless that Scythe is made from aluminium, I would expect it to bounce up and down a bit more when she runs. I guess she's stronger than she looks, but still...  :)
