Pixel Art / Demon Slayer
« on: February 08, 2007, 03:42:30 pm »

Hey guys, been lurking a bit and I feel like pushing pixels again. This is a render of a character for a game I'm putting together for fun.  Any c+c would be great.

Some progress shots.

An initial quick sketch to set down the basic design first and keep things from going all over the place in the render.

Edit:
Looking forward to learning from you guys. Neat to see that Pixelation is back up.  :)

Hey David! good to see some of your work every now and again.

You've always had a great sense of gesture. You got him up on one foot and he looks well balanced. Nothing much to critique really, continue focusing on expressing the shapes of the forms with tone to make things look more solid and rounded out.

Taking to heart some of the C+C I've recieved on at this board I became motivated to study the fundamentals and try my hand at more traditional mediums. I'm looking foward to getting back to pixel art someday to apply the things I'm learning.  Looking at the pixel art section, It's amazing how much several of you have improved in the past few months!

Thanks Filax! Your gift made my day.  ;D

Sorry about not responding earlier, was too occupied with other things to log on past few weeks.
Here's one for you.

Bwahahaha, you should make it to where the tanks can run over other units, monster truck style.  Nice job on fitting all that info into such a small screen.

Great stuff Kenneth. It would be fun to see the game redone as a side brawler like final fight. I have no idea why anyone would eat a turkey dinner that they found in smashed phone booth rubble.

I'm thinking about redoing this from scratch (things you guys said motivates me to tackle it on a more epic and finished scale) but after I visit a few more ideas and formats. Been doing character design for so long now I've got an itch to make environments to put them in.

Thanks for the feedback and compliments. I'll read through the critiques again when I feel more ready to try out the other parts of this idea that I didn't have the persistence or know how to finish.

Thanks to st0ven and whoever put together the tutorials on pixel-art for info on how to work in iso. I looked at those a lot while figuring out how to make ground tiles that would tessellate.

Every time I see one of those neat iso city scenes with everything tidy and in order I think it begs for a Godzilla type monster to come in and make a little mess. :P First attempt at finishing something done in isometric perspective. Looking back on the effort involved I have a greater appreciation of how difficult it is to express things this way.

Thanks again for the comments guys. :]

Hey Camus, Your critique is along the lines of a thought I had. Was thinking of studying a lot of the old masters (heh, kind've funny when 10 year old art is considered old) far back as NES to see how they tackled some problems an to appreciate how things have progressed. feature minimization does have me stumped. seems like something you have to develop an intuition for rather than having specific methods to follow.

That's really cool looking! hope you decide to finish it.  Can't really say much since you're so far from done. The only thing that looks progressed that bothers me is his neck. Seems like the Adam's apple shouldn't be lit since it's in a shadow.
