Pixel Art / Re: Roman Man

If it was my own piece, obviously I would have ensured more time on everything (especially taking more time on the shapes). I personally would alter his head to a 3/4 view... but I was trying to keep it similar to what he had. It looked like he had it at a profile, so I put it like that. I was mainly just trying to get a quick edit done in hopes of helping him. Not to say you shouldn't critique what I've done; the more accurate the information the better. I'm also just ensuring you know I'm not the OP. I'm sure you probably already knew this, but just in case you know?

An edit I've made, I've tried to:
  • Messed with skin tone; looks more like flesh less sickly
  • Fix his back posture
  • Make his standing position look more comfortable (instead of knees being bent; looks very awkward)
  • Give more character to him (I tried to go what I think you wanted, I hope I've done fine)
  • Give a more definite light source
  • Fix a few anatomical errors to the best of my knowledge
Take what you will from this edit. I hope it helps you.

You do need a stronger contrasting palette; regardless of if you change it over to being more dramatic or not. You also need a more definite light source. I was hoping the dithering would work with making the blood look more transparent... Also you might want to look at the sprites from Metal Slug (specifically the zombie ones) for inspiration/reference. Good to hear you're not completely conforming to what I've done; experimentation is always good. Oh, and one more thing I forgot to mention. You should probably get rid of the outside anti-aliasing, imo it doesn't work too well.

You need to grab a book on perspective; I suggest Perspective! For Comic Book Artists.

Edit; mainly palette suggestions.... and rendering fixes. Also tried to make it so it pops out more.

Only thing I think you should do is make it more tree-like. Give it more feeling of bark, that the skins in layers, so it differentiates more from human skin. Also maybe add some branches or something on her? Looking good though, as usual eyecraft.

Sloppy edit:

I'm not sure what that object is, but my suggestion is you make it POP. You can really make it look like its made out of metal by giving it strong contrast. When you're rendering this, think HARD, STRONG, not soft, weak.

Here's an edit I've done; I suggest you use some reference of liquid in a glass container. The main thing you gotta do is know its coming from a light source. The water wouldn't just go from dark to light like a gradient (except in very, very certain circumstances). It'd also be wiser to work within a gray-ish background, instead of white; helps see values more clearly, and plus, you can outline with things other than dark colors.

I don't know if anyone knows about this yet. I may be late on this, but theres a new MAME emulator that is developed specifically for shmups. What drew me to this emulator was the fact it could run some newer (not too new) Cave games including Dodonpachi Dai-Ou-Jou, EspGaluda, and Ketsui. I figured you might all be interested so I'll link to the emulator: http://shmupmame.wordpress.com/

I highly suggest you reference some clouds and don't use solid grays, throw a little color in.
