2D & 3D / Re: Oh boy!

Okay, here we go again. I'm really pretty inexperienced with 3D animation so this is a bit of trial and error, especially with the rigging.

Any better? It's supposed to be a slightly goofy character, doing its best to be intimidating.

2D & 3D / Oh boy!

So, this is pretty much my first foray in the whole low-spec 3D stuff, finished rigging it this weekend. I'm fairly experienced with high-poly stuff and all that jazz, but I'm pretty new to this. Made a lot of big mistakes in the process, but I think I learned a lot. Crits are very welcome though I might just toss this one and do a new one. Any comments will help with the next one. This was intended to be viewed from quite a distance, so if you squint or zoom out it gives you a bit more of an accurate idea of what it should look like.

Edit: Oh snap forgot the wire and the texture!
246 faces or 466 tris. About one day for the modeling and texturing, and another for the rigging and animating.

Nice improvement so far. I would definitely stick with batch 1. Also I would really suggest you blend the highlight in a bit more, make the lightest two or three shades more reddish-orange. Keep the saturation high on those highlights and make the color very close to the background.

If I may just toss in my two cents, the chicken legs don't look like chicken legs at all unless perhaps they're supposed to be fried chicken legs, which I somehow doubt. Find a picture of a chicken and look at its legs. From the ankle down to the toes it's nothing but scaly skin on bone, usually a yellow or pink color. Once you get past the ankles it's all muscle and feathers and whatnot. Do an imagesearch for "chicken" and "chicken skeleton" to find some good references.

Nope, Maya. I have used Blender before though, it seems very powerful for a freeware program. Just got used to Maya ages ago with the PLE and have stuck with it since then. I have to say the boss has improved a LOT since it's first incarnation. The stripes on the joint on the middle leg break up its form a bit, I'd shade it a bit more solidly. I'd also try to add a bit more interest to the main hull and laser bulb thingies. Like pipes and plates and little panels, just so it's more interesting to look at. Do an image search for industrial robot or something along those lines for some ideas.

Here's an illustration of how the joint would probably look on the middle leg.

Well, for the top one, the skull looks totally different than it does in the sideview. The lumps on the sides are gone, the forehead-nose area looks narrower, and I don't even know what's going on with the eyeholes. I think the nostrils are too visible as well. The arm looks a little weird, maybe make the paw just a bit bigger? Same goes for the shoulder, perhaps widen where it attaches by just a bit. The closer leg looks weird when it's in the back position, I think it's too dark, especially when compared to the leg in the other two, where it's much lighter. I think that's all I've got for now.  :y:

Well, I was going to post a crit, but then I couldn't really figure out what exactly you want me to look at for you. The palette? The think facing us? The one facing right? I got the impression from your first post that you're looking for crits on the three up at the top, but I'm not sure.

Interesting you should post that, Ben. I've just been fighting with the thing for the past couple of days. I absolutely loathe the interface, especially the 2.5D crap and the bloody stupid "hold alt, left click, let go of alt, move mouse" thing for doing ZBrush's equivalent of zooming--which is actually scaling the object you're working on. Maybe old-school modeling techniques are too ingrained in me but it put me off this new-age ultra-high poly sculpting stuff and I still like dealing with verts, edges and faces. Trying out Mudbox right now though and it's starting to convince me perhaps there's something to it, interface is a heckalot easier to use, that's for sure.

Well, sorry this is going to be short, I've got to run. But I just wanted to comment on her cleavage. It looks to me like it goes a bit too high and goes in a bit too deep. Like she's got a sunken chest cavity and huge boobs sprouting out of it. Also, watch your perspective, her shoulders look to be straight across but her left armpit looks like it would be a lot higher than the right. Or alternatively her breast actually is growing out of her shoulder. And as for the lips I'd try a "cupid's bow" kind of look. Do and image search for that and you should come up with a lot of good references. Cheers!  ;D
