I still prefer the lineart version, but I always get more positive feedback when I shade.  Maybe for viewers it crosses from "I could do that, if I spent the time" to "Wow, I'm not that good with pixels" which isn't meant to sound like a boast, because I look around here and I don't feel all that great with pixels, but I've also seen what the average non-pixel-person (or maybe the average one-man-game-maker) produces with pixels too and it's rarely pretty.

Colored Lineart -------> Shaded ---> Shaded /w gradients-----> Background added.

Source image by a friend of mine.  We codesigned her

I'm considering this complete.  The background on the 4th one is a bit of a mess (This is my first time working with gradients, and the BG proved to be more than I can handle at this point  I'll probably go study that Dithering thread in the resources here after this), but I'm still open to hear what people have to say.  I can't seem to ever consider a project complete, and I might go back to make it better.

16 colors (one transparent).  That pink in the mouth is only used once, but it's right at a focal point.  Considering saturating it more just to make it pop.

Now that I'm about to post it, I see numerous little things I'd change.  Meh.

I'm pretty sure that's the back flap of her skirt, cast under shadow.

Unless you're talking about something else.

Oh, I know what it is.  I just dont think it reads well.  It looks like a big pixel.  Is this an example of banding?

And I am back. I meant to have something last week but it took me into the middle of the week to get my proposal to where I wanted it to be.

This is what I have as of today.

I tried to work on fixing the outlines and increasing the resolution of the sprite as well as bringing the blue and gloves into line with the rest of it.

Hi Camus! It has certainly been a long-time-no-see. :) I definitely like the shape you achieved with the shoes and the muscle tone, I need to have a good look at that!

Looking way better, IMO.  Was this built over the stripped-down edit I sent you in IM?

Speaking as a newly converted brony I would like to say this is pretty nice. I can imagine she's good friends with Pinkie Pie as well.

Heh, I don't really read the roleplaying sessions these characters go into, but maybe.  Welcome to the herd, brony.

Edit:  WHOAH.  I just discovered you can click on image to zoom in here.  Mind = Blown.

Fini.  Thanks a ton guys.  This is definitely the nicest work I've made, and I couldn't have done it without your help.

I feel like the cutie mark is WAY too big, but it does look more like a martini now.  Neither one really quite fits the image, but I don't know that anything can be done about that.  I still like the flat-shaded one better, but 99% of the people I show this to like the shading better.  I've always been a fan of flat, I guess.

Over on the pony forums, I've actually gotten a commission request, so hey, a chance for some pocket change!  Edit:  Eh, considering I don't have the basic pencil-sketching skills to compose much yet, I suppose a commission would be inethical, as I'd be relying on other peoples' sketches.  W/ev.

Okay, well Cure is some kind of pixel freak, because he started out half-decent and just got amazing.

As for the long post apologies, feel free to make a long post!  This is your Pixel-Story!  Rome wasn't built in a day, and I'm interested in the journey.

Of course, all of us have, at some point in our lives, been noobs.  I want to see how far people have come.  Do any of you pixel-senseis have early works that you might have been proud of at the time but look back at like "man, that sucks."  Or alternately, stuff that you're not even proud of at all, but still have lying around for whatever reason.  I know I would find it encouraging to see how far people have come, and I'm sure there are probably some others out there as well that would too.

What's YOUR pixel story?  I think it'd be inspiring to see the kind of progress people can make when they work at something

I started when I was around 12, making sprites for a Hypercard game my friends and I were making at school.  32x32, 2 colors.  It was a lot of fun, and I learned a lot by having to deal with such strict limitations.  Shortly after Jr. Hugh though, I stopped.  I restarted about a month ago (20 years later!) after having promised some friends on another board I'd make them a set of smileys.

I wish I could post those old sprites from the 90s, but I honestly don't know if hypercard still exists, much less where that old floppy disk with the game on it went to.  This was the first work I declared "finished" from about 6 weeks ago: , and yeah, I can spot the inexperience (although I'm still fond of a couple of those).  Not trying to pretend like I'm all good now or anything, but I'm better than I was.

But I'm most curious about those of you who have been at this for YEARS.  How much has your stuff changed?

I don't particularly care to change your views, just as long as they're educated.

Oh, I assure you they're not, but I'm working on it.

Aww, I'm kinda disappointed that my "what is selout?" question didn't kick up a shitstorm like in those links there.  Sadface.

So literally it's "selective outlining", colloquially it's dark broken outlines (esp. against light backgrounds), practically it's just anti-aliasing done badly, or done to specific contexts, and ultimately, it should never, ever, be discussed because nobody knows for certain what it is, or whether it exists.  Did I get the gist?

Would you hate me if I said it looks okay sometimes?  I like Capcom's sprites...
