Pixel Art / Re: an armoire covered in icepicks

I'm confused as to the material out of which the green wall is constructed, is it some sort of ancient copper structure, out in the rain too long? Or moss growing on rock? Either way, these are gorgeous. The rock formations from a top-down perspective are rather organically shaped, how are you planning on handling movement and wall collision boundaries? The curiosity of the game developer in me, rather than the pixel artist.

I wish i was 9 again.

Indeed, mountain grass, as we're calling it, is actually more like moss than grass, since it's growing in a less fertile environment. Although carpet-y moss is justified in the situation, the resemblance to the inside of a 60's era Volkswagen is less so. It needs to have some sort of anchor point, like parts of the grass drooping over the side, etc, to make it look less uniform, perhaps.

Reads really nicely at 1x. Any reference used?

Oh, and screw restrictions, if the piece benefits without them, it's all good.

A white outline would hinder this piece more than it would help, I'm afraid.

Thanks for the crits Helm.  I will keep everything you said in mind when I go back to work on it.  As well as for new pieces.  You are right I neglect the hands and need to bang out a couple hundred gestures to learn to pose things properly.  I will also make sure to post stuff here more often.  People at CA.org don't give much helpful critique it seems.  At least not in the character a week section.

Was it in the finished works section or the critique section? In any case, CA tends to deviate more towards praise and showcase for professional artists, at least that is what i got from it. A nice site though, I browse.

Pixel Art / Re: The Reaper/New Dump...

Your reaper piece has a cool character concept going for it. I'd say kick the resolution up and give him some more personality, the costume deserves a face. It's a really interesting twist on the generic reaper cliche.

the back/right leg (our right) does not seem to be making the same motion as the others, while it walks. Almost like it's limping..  You need to make sure you have it at this angle, in one frame ---> /
right now it only appears at this angle --> \     all the time, while the others go through both angles, creating the illusion that it's actually preforming a walk. Looking much better though now, great improvement.

edit: i really hope that made sense, i am on my laptop, and i haven't a gif editor to do an edit. also, finish davey jones! the lineart is really good.

helms reads much better

i'd say they read about the same, but it's really a stylistic thing. Helm's could use perhaps correct lower body proportions? It depends on the size restrictions. Chris's does well of making a more realistic feel in respects to the original sprite's size, while Helm's would look adequate with a slightly more apt leg... region.

You really have to play the game to see how the characters pop out, there is so much freakin' parallax going on that it's easy to tell where the player is, at most times. Personally, i like number 3 the best, while the one in the screenshot seems to have a face that fits in better with the main character.
