Pixel Art / [WIP] Tiny Beat Em Up Sprite
« on: February 01, 2007, 05:09:06 pm »
Just some animation practice. Yes, he is very small. I'll save you all some typing and say it myself.

As always, my colors suck. I know I need contrast with the skin tone, but I just dont know how to do it. Also, is it best to start practicing animation on tiny things like this? Id love to hear feedback and get some help. Oh, and sorry for the missing apostrophes, but the key isnt working (again.)

His forearm is bending like 90 degrees! Look at his elbow and follow the line to his hand. Yeah, darken some of those values. You can't see any of your details as it is.

But the wings are meant to cover the body, and i like the way they cover it.
He means they should follow the shape of the body behind them. Right now they look like they are a flat image floating a few inches in front of the angel. If you give it some work, you can make it look like they are coming out from over his shoulders.

Well, I'll hop on the band wagon and agree that the color selection is excellent. They are bold, ridiculous colors, but it matches the bold, ridiculous subject matter. I don't know about greatest pixel art in the world, though. The greatest pixel art I've ever seen is the tileset to a game that got canceled. I'd post it, but I think I might get in trouble for threadjacking or whatever you call it. Maybe its like the song "Tribute." You know, like he accidentally deleted the greatest pixel art in the world and made this one to commemerate it.

Helm, your heads are different heights. Is that on purpose? Nice edit, though his middle looks a bit "tube-ish" if you know what I mean (no hips.) Also, either Captain Generic's powers include the ability to have a mouth where his nostrils should be or you need to scoot that sucker down a bit. Then again, that might be a mustache. I swear, one of these days I'll actually edit!

Ok, I juked the colors around a bit. Is it too saturated? I can already tell I'll need more contrast in the yellows... grrr, I suck at color selection!

Pixel Art / The Oculus
« on: January 24, 2007, 01:22:45 pm »
Well, Diablo II has been eatting into my pixeling time, so I figured I'd use it as a theme for my next piece. This is a short, almost "chibi" version of one of the best weapons in the game, The Oculus. Its kind of like a magic wand/crystal ball thing. The original can be seen here: http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/normal/usorceress.shtml

Makes me think of Cthulhu (did I spell that correctly?) Granted I haven't read much (any) of the Cthulhu mythos, so no one dissect that comment too much. Anyway, perhaps you could add some contrast to his innards by adding some more darkness in there, especially along the "back wall" of his insides. I'm curious what it would look like if you almost blacked it out and just caught the detail with highlights (not curious enough to do an edit, though.) Its a dark, mysterious, grotesque piece; I love it!

...Hey, I just now noticed his little mouth. It looks like a really fat kid's smile.

Well, I didn't really do much of anything with it, but I'm going to go ahead and call this WIP no longer a WIP... except that its titled WIP... I think... uh... ok here it is:

I also tried adding some more shaded area, but I didn't like the over rounded, shorter look it conveyed.

For some reason I just like the flat look better here, so I gave up early on the second style. Anyways, the purpose of the project was to train my hue shifting skills and do sort of a chi garden thing with the lines in the face/ribcage. I guess I got what I wanted from it, so I'll call this one done like dinner.
