Pixel Art / Re: WIP Viking king
« on: April 06, 2009, 05:35:51 pm »
Even if the anatomy is correct this isn't a very interesting shot. It's a straight on shot of a very mundane looking king. He doesn't look like a king, not even a viking king.
His facial expression is boring and lucky for you it conveys boredom. A lazy king really would have more weight on him. hunched over maybe?

I suggest you draw this with paper and pencil before you haphazardly jump into a pixel piece. On paper you can easily sketch 5 different thumbnails in 5 minutes, try it.

Find references if you can. images.google.com is a great place to start. There are a few good stock photo websites. Also look at some other art work involving vikings and things associated with vikings. Try to get a reference picture for everything you're going to make. 2-3 pictures for each piece should put you in the right direction.

Arthur Rackham
David Raposa (specifically that page)

If you want to see some really nice beards find el_coro's project "BUM". It's got some great art and even greater beards. Though nothing beats a real beard.

I think you should mirror booth sides so he hold his sword in his right arm. Right now he is holding his shield at his right arm and his sword in his left

Why? Just hating on left handed people?

Frosty, this great work. Only problem I see is the hammer. It looks like it's has a really narrow head. Almost an ax shape. A more cylindrical shape should help.

That perspective looks very off with that car and the street leading away. Look at the "AAAH NO MORE TREES!" thread and steal the help for trees.

Umm... why is a building in the middle of the street?

I think the contrast of the black is really messing the readability of things. For the cool mustache guy I hardly notice anything other than the black. I have to connect the dots.

So he's almost entirely eaten, makes sense once you point it out.

Last time I ate a human being there was a lot of blood. Just saying.

Even though you've broken through your artist block you still should put effort into this. It reads terribly. My cousin and I thought it was a bird eating a worm eating a glass bottle. Then we thought it had and elongated neck or a weird beak.
Use color and value to separate things a bit. If it's separated it's probably a different creature/object.

The bird's body looks fine.

One very useful piece of knowledge I can share with you is to stop studying pixel art.

Make sketches as much as you can, use references even after you think you got everything down pat.
A lot of us here aren't just pixel artists. I am a sculptor and screen printer.

When I make pixel art I usually do it with a solid idea in mind, sometimes a sketch. If I'm doing work that I'm getting paid for I have multiple sketches and a handful of references pinned up around my computer or opened in my computer.

If you can paint the Mona Lisa with oils you can probably make something nice in with pixel art. If you can sketch a sketch a bird you can probably pixel push one into existence.

I've been pushing pixels for fun for a few years. Nothing serious, I do it when I'm bored or get a job offer.
I'm a student at college, I have my associate degree in English but am now pursuing the fine arts.
I make a little money selling my sculptures and do some graphic design work whenever I can.

P.S. At the age of 12 Picasso was already a pretty talented painter. Mind you he dedicated his life to art.

Pixel Art / Re: Character Art

Please don't take that crit as an insult. There were and still are problems with your sprite. It's a pretty unmanageable size and that's hindering your progress. Several people have pointed this out before and I think you should really consider do it.
Another thing that might help with this whole process is knowing a little bit about this character. What kind of time/world is he from? why does he have two identical swords? Is he human? What's his role in the hypothetical story?
Questions like these give a little life to your character.

As for my edit looking flaming gay ... I don't see it. In my mind he was a fencer. A fencer in a world where people can wield giant weapons with ease. He's a bit pompous and simply "I'm better than you".

If this piece doesn't need to be big then don't make it big.

Pixel Art Feature Chest / Re: Valkyrie no Bouken - NES sprites
« on: March 29, 2009, 06:56:51 pm »
I remember playing this game during one of my NES binges a few months ago.
I think your pseudo-NES style your using is perfectly fine. Ben2TheEdge recently did pixel work for the back of a Scott Pilgrim comic and explained he wanted people to get the feel of NES without having to worry about the restrictions (correct me if I'm wrong). So if you're taking the same route then you're fine.

As for the actually sprites I think you've got everything going in the right directions. A few sprites stick out a bit more than others, like the croc. The first and last ones look the best but I think the solid outline hurts them. Try breaking that up a bit. The trees look a bit goofy, maybe it's the placement of the tree and the leaves.

A problem you could run into is with the Valkyrie. If you continue with the idea of players picking their color (which was pretty awesome for a NES game) then you should make that green change. Maybe that color could be a choice too or maybe the armor could be the complimentary color.

You've obviously done a good amount of research on this and it's paying off. Hope to see more updates.
