Sorry for the double post but here's a shot at lighting..

As for the light, I'm not sure if you're trying to improve it, but if you are, you REALLY need to fix the pillow shading. You could go for dithering, witch gives it a retro-style feeling IMO.

quick edit hope it helps....

mine:     yours:

Yours look worse in terms of color, the best I could suggest to goose is it needs more contrast in the OUTMOST outline and some AA like so: as you can see I dropped the AA cause transparency and AA don't mix.

You can see lines in between the different shades in the sky and ground, you need to make it more blended.

How is it a tile? Use more colors for the sky and ground unless you want that effect. Work more on the individual objects and then piece them together so know what your doing without the distraction of everything else.

Well I've no idea who is who in your sprites but Celes (I'm guessing) has a flower in her hair (is it a flower?) that looks ALOT like an ear, maybe make it less skin colorish?

I... I'm amazed! Those are the best ever! The only thing I would try to change would be the middle shaft-what'cha-ma-call-it in the middle, it needs to be a bit more obvious.

Since your new, it might be a good idea to start a bit smaller (ok, a LOT smaller), 16x16 FF2 (Final Fantasy 2) style. Here is the template: just download that and open it with your art program of choice, then follow this tutorial:

I love it, only bad thing is the pines, but as you said, they aren't finished. Really I don't get what the problem with lots of colors is, yeah it loads a bit slower but really whats the big deal with them?
