Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Boss ship
« on: June 16, 2011, 08:56:47 pm »
Changed the color of the ship to something a bit more readable. This pic has kind of a breakdown of the layering...

1) Top one: This is just the ship layer, black, green, dark green, and transparency.
2) Middle pic: Shows the other layers that go on top of the ship, the jewel colors have been changed for gameplay, and the black outline is just to help visualize it a bit.
3) Bottom pic: Shows all the layers together, I've changed the color of the guns in the front to grey, which I think is an improvement ;)

Next step is to draw the jewels as damaged, although I find myself having a really hard time doing that! Are there any tutorials on how to draw things that are damaged/being destroyed?

Here's a pic of this bad boy in-game, the supporting projectile animations still need some work ;)

Thanks for the feedback all!

Pixel Art / [WIP] Boss ship

I've been working on a nifty NES Raiden type game with a twist, and I thought I'd do a boss that had a bit more going on visually. I'm only using 4 colors (1 for transparency) although I'm layering some of the sprites on top of each other as was done back in the day ;) I'm going for a dark techy kind of look for this boss. I'm pretty happy with the rendering (even though I just copied over the right side) and I'm looking for some critiques on it in general. I know the palette is a bit odd, what can I say? I like weird palettes apparently ;)

If there's any trouble spots or inconsistencies in this boss, let me know! ;)

Here's the palette I'm using...

Indeed I'm using NES limitations (I suppose I should of mentioned that :P). In general, I'm pretty happy with the palette and the style, at this point I'm more focused on the animation itself ;)

Thanks for checking it out and replying!

Pixel Art / Adventure character crit

Hi all! I'm attempting to work in a little animation into the next Lazy Brain game. I like this character's overall feel, but I'm not sure about the walking animation. In the game it seems okay, but I think it could be a bit better. I'm going to "paper doll" this guy once I'm happy with it, so I'm hoping I can get this thing right lol. Any edits, crits, or pointers?

Thanks!

These are all the sprites and background tiles for Mecha Spider Island, which you can play here...

http://lazybraingames.wordpress.com/mecha-spider-island/

It also has some pretty sweet box art ;)

I think my last comment kinda came out wrong, to better clarify, working with animators (or anyone else really) is extremely susceptible to flakeyness when there isn't any money ;)

Thanks for checking out the sprites! If you think they're epic, just wait till you hear the music ;)

Thanks for playing!!

I avoid animation like the plague lol. There are plans in the future to show off some of my animations skills, but the game would have be built around it, since animating takes so much of time away from coding, designing, etc. I could attempt to get an animator, but most of them like money :P Anyway, thanks for checkin' it out :)

Hi all! Just thought I'd post up some of the pixel art for the latest Lazy Brain Game, Mecha Spider Island. This game is far bigger than previous entries, but still uses the same crazy palette, which I have finally retired ;) Any and all critiques are always welcome :)

If you want to see it all together, check out the game ;)

2D & 3D / Re: How to achieve seamless low res textures in Maya?
« on: March 13, 2011, 02:07:11 am »
I'm not sure if this will be of any help, since I'm not a modeler, but I do use a seamless tiling program called "Filter Forge" to assist in tilesets. It's original function is for seamless textures for 3d models though. Here's a link...

While they're nothing super-special, I thought I'd just share these just for fun, although crits are certainly welcome ;) The whole game was made in about 2 days.

Here's a link to the game if you want to see how it all fits together.

Whoops! I meant to do an edit! Not double post! Sorry mods!

Thanks for the replies guys ;) I haven't been too active with the artwork on this, as I'm still trying to nail down the gameplay. The screenshots above are a bit dated, here's a more recent one. I am pretty happy with the rock & ice. Most of my time spend on art has been consumed by the new HUD and gameplay system. An alpha build will be coming soon!

@Grinner
You're the first to note that indeed it is a mario glove lol. The readability on that glove is awesome, but it does look a bit out of place. I'm still working on that aspect :P This game has become sort of a mashup of Gradius, Contra, Street Fighter 2010, Megaman, Final Fantasy, and Burai Warrior. Quite a few different influences! The basic gameplay is very similar to an earlier game, Factorium:

@Konrad
The flicker/opacity issue is something of much internal debate. For this game, I'm "cheating" like hell. The most retro-faithful game I've ever done was Cyborg Virus:

I may work in some of the scanline/flicker stuff you brought up, as I do love the look of it too ;)

Thanks for looking!

[EDIT]

I just uploaded a video of the game on youtube. This will help you see how all of it fits together ;)

[EDIT]

Here's a playable demo of the game, let me know how it looks!
