Pixel Art / Lazy Brain logo/t-shirt
« on: September 24, 2012, 12:09:17 am »
I'm planning on making some shirts with the Lazy Brain logo on them, but the logo itself definitely needed an overhaul before it could be ready for prime time lol. So, I reworked the actual drawing so that its at least somewhat presentable.

Here's the logo currently:

I pretty much redid the logo entirely, and designed it to be 2 tone for shirts. This is where I need the most help, does this kind of stylized look make sense? I have no real experience in this arena so any pointers are greatly appreciated!

And of course I've been playing with different color schemes to try and figure out what a young-ish male is actually going to be interested in wearing (presuming they want to wear a shirt with such a logo on it in the first place lol).

And here's one mockup just for kicks ;)

So, let me know if the pixel-art itself holds up, and any other input you might have about it as a shirt in general if you have the time ;)

Thanks!

Pixel Art / [WIP] "Triple Gauntlet"
« on: September 23, 2012, 04:20:28 am »
Normally I wouldn't post something that's so early in its design, but it took quite some time just to get to this point! So, before I get into any tuning and detailing, I just wanted to see if anyone could find any big structural issues with the "triple gauntlet"

Here's the full thing,

Here how it appears in-game, after each section is complete, the image moves down to the next section.

Anyway, let me know what you think! :D

Pixel Art / NES portrait help
« on: September 10, 2012, 06:00:41 am »
Hi all!

I'm working on something for the "Continue?" show, featuring the cast of the show as playable characters (I'll get into these guys' in-game persona's at some point) but currently I'm really struggling with getting some decent text box portraits of these guys.

I feel like I'm in the right neck of the woods, but I could definitely use a few pointers! Its an NES styled game, so I'm restricted to the NES palette. I haven't done portraits of actual people in years, so my ability to capture somebody's likeness has diminished a bit :P Its an action game, so I want to idealize their appearance; think of these portraits as an action hero rendition of them.

I feel like the first one (Nick) is the best so far. The other two (Paul and Josh) I'm not quite sure what I'm missing. let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions to get these portraits a little closer to the real thing ;)

Added a light source and played with the palette a bit

General Discussion / Anti aliasing issue
« on: September 17, 2011, 07:20:54 am »
Hi all! I test driving a new computer, all seems well except I can't seem to turn off the anti aliasing when using Photoshop or running Game Maker games :P I looked all over the internets, but I couldn't find anything addressing this issue. I'm posting here partly out of desperation, but also because I figure some pixel artists may have run into this type of problem themselves. I'm not the most tech savvy guy, but I'm usually able to navigate settings type problems, but this time around, I got nothin' :P The specs are...

Model: Dell Inspiron 620
Graphics card: Intel HD graphics family
Running Windows 7

I suspect its the graphics card, I don't know what the heck a "Intel HD graphics family" card is :P

Just to better explain my issue, here's some examples of my issue...

Up close, everything's fine

But once I back up the view...

How the games used to look...

How they look now...

Its interesting that while one monitor is new, I have a dual monitor set up and I'm using one monitor that previously didn't have this problem with the old computer. This older monitor now has this same issue. Is it the graphics card? Is it windows 7? Anyway, I haven't a clue, but I'm hoping some pixel artists might be sympathetic to my problem :P There really isn't any support for this kind of question (at least where I've looked in the past few hours). All the posts and tutorials I've seen are talking about AA for text, or how to navigate to the setting within a specific game :P

Thanks to all who reply!

[EDIT]
Stuff I've tried:
1) Turned off second monitor
2) Turned off Aero and all hardware acceleration
3) Tried different resolutions
4) Shouted at computer lol ;)

Pixel Art / Outer space scene help
« on: September 06, 2011, 09:37:06 pm »
Working on a level select in the form of an outer space scene. I'm generally happy with the shadowing on the space station, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong on the planets. It looks okay from a distance, but up close its kind of yuck. Is there enough shadow on the planets? Too much? I feel like I'm close to making it look cool, I'm just not sure where to go next to wrap this thing up :P

Pixel Art / Character full body C+C
« on: September 05, 2011, 10:09:30 am »
I'm a little rusty at figure drawing, this is my first attempt at a portrait for a character. There's a few proportion issues, I'm not sure if this is salvageable or if I'd be better off starting again from scratch :P Any pointers?

The design is based on the little blue guy in the pic here:

Here's the palette I'm working with...

Pixel Art / Infernal Edge pixel art CC
« on: August 28, 2011, 07:50:18 am »
Hi all! Just thought I'd share some of the pixel art for the latest Lazy Brain Game, Infernal Edge. Overall I'm pretty happy with the results this time around, the use of brown seems to somehow give it a darker feel than black, go figure :P The Big boss there is the only one that has any real black, I didn't really want him to since its inconsistent with the rest of the art, but at a certain point I realized I was worrying about it more than the player would be lol.

Any pointers on the animations (what little there is) and the overall feel are more than welcome! I like to think I'm improving a bit from when I first started posting on here, but there's still so much to learn!

Pixel Art / "Dream Girl" NES CC
« on: August 15, 2011, 07:49:03 pm »
I've just started a new project, so I've been working on the main player character. There are some influences from Little Nemo and Alice in Wonderland, I've been working on various facial expressions. Is everything reading okay? Any crits or recommendations before I move forward with this?

Thanks! :D

Pixel Art / [WIP] "Big Boy" Space Destroyer, color issues
« on: August 06, 2011, 04:15:13 am »
Hi all! I'm just about done with this next game, but I seem to have a bit of a color issue with this guy, "Big Boy". For some crazy reason, I shaded it with black, when absolutely nothing else has black in it (brown is the darkest color in the entire game save the background). So, aside from any regular lighting CC stuff, any recommendations on how to ease the black out and get just the brown in?

With black:

Black simply filled in with brown, trying to think of some better way of handling it:

Here's the palette I'm using, I'm in too deep to change it at this point, which makes trying to salvage Big Boy all the more challenging :P

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Pixel Art / Omnicron pixel dump
« on: July 26, 2011, 08:31:35 pm »
I finally finished Omnicron, and I thought I'd share some of the pixel art for the game ;) I used a new palette for this one, I'm pretty happy with the darker, more realistic feel I got with this palette. I like most of it, the picture of the ship seems to be a bit broken though lol. Now that I'm looking at all of it together, there certainly no shortage of brief projectile animations :P I'd like to thank the Pixelation community for all the help on the final boss image, he looks pretty sweet!

Here's the link to the game if you want to see how it all fits together ;)
