Finished it this morning. I'm a little peeved about how limited I was with the characters, but thats what you get for working in 8x8! There is currently 22 colours used, plus transparancies.

I've never tiled before, but I'm really enjoying this. Theres a whole lot left to do obviously, but I'd like to hear a bit of respone on what I've got so far! I can probably still fiddle with the colours a lot. Can't wait to do the characters and enemies.

VERY cool Xion! I can certainly see some of my specific works in there, and the style is almost beyond me! BE-UTE-I-FUL. Your method of selective outlining is also quite intriguing- but good luck! I'm liking the red nose so far and nice dither work.

Yeah, I LURVE Heli Attack 3. I got hooked on it earlier in the year. I also remember DayDream posting his graphics on Pixel Joint a while back.

I would really have to see a scaled image to judge that background properly, but it is looking pretty damn sweet at the moment! I especially like the houses, but its hard to nitpick with the other tiles at this size- although I understand that reducing the image is neccessary to protect the work of the arteeests.

I enjoyed what you've done with the animation, even though I think the character sort of looks out of place colour wise. This might help ensure he stands out, I'm not sure!

The westernlords journal was also quite interesting, thanks for posting it. I hope to find myself pixelling for committed game makers some time soon, and this was a nice introduction to the independant gaming scene for me!

Anyway, the project looks great so far. Good luck, and keep us posted!

Wow, I love the soft palette Pegucha.

The sedgemonkey is also spot on Lief!

I've done a little more work. Started the animation process. Not sure how to get that zippy 'movement line' effect that Xion Night employs, but its a start! I also fiddled with the colours significantly.

I dig the style aswell. Sort of reminds me of the graphics in 'A Game with a Kitty', especially the colours. You can check out the game at http://www.faind.com/, second post down.
The idea is also quite neat, I just think the main character is perhaps a little too simple, which tends to make him look uninteresting.

where you trying to go for this for dithering practice to get used to indigo's dithering?

Was this in relation to the Pirate Challenge? If so, I think Zach must've just mixed up me with indigo. But the dithering is quite nice, although somewhat inconsistent because some characters have it, others don't making them look flat. Also with such small sprites I'd even question using dithering at all, even with such a small colour count.

VERY cool Xion Night! But I agree, it doesnt seem to neccessarily relate to my work in many ways, other than stylistically speaking. I think youve reflected my style sufficiantly, especially in the use of dithering other shading techniques such as a series of vertical lines. I wrote a post at PJ regarding my lineart a while back http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=440&PN=1 Might be helpful. My only suggestion would be to include references to specific works- but I'm not sure how easy that would be!

I don't see why you can't post it here, its coming along great!

Sedge: Huge improvement! It's nice to see you tightening up your pixels, but the sketchy look is still quite effective especially in the clouds.
And thanks for the suggestion. I intend to have my pirate's good eye wobble around as the mini version of himself makes his way to the treasure.

Here's my updatee:

I still need to finish the shading on the jungle and sand, and I haven't begun to comtemplate the difficulties in animating this guy!

OKAY. Here's what I've got so far:

17 colours, some of which directly taken from Xion Night's works.

The pirate is based on a number of Xion Night's larger characters as far as pose and shading details go. I also tried to make it slightly dark and twisted.

The 'conversation' bubble will be an animated treasure map, which will see the character run and hop his way to the treasure chest (x marks the spot!) at the lower left hand corner, impersonating XN's current avatar. Trying to incorporate as much of XN's style as possible, but staying original at the same time.

Not too sure about the background yet. It's really simple so far as not to distract, but I think I'll need to do something with it before I can animate the map.
